It's expected that your local Dropbox folder will often be larger than the size of the files that you're actually syncing. The Dropbox folder contains a hidden .dropbox.cache folder that Dropbox uses during the sync process and to temporarily store files deleted elsewhere (online or on other devices).
When checking the size of the local Dropbox folder, it will include everything stored in the folder, including the hidden cache folder and any files or folders that you've told Dropbox to ignore, if any.
