You might see that the Dropbox Community team have been busy working on some major updates to the Community itself! So, here is some info on what’s changed, what’s staying the same and what you can expect from the Dropbox Community overall.

Gathering Support
Automatically pause Dropbox Backup/syncing to allow unmounting of external drive.
Stop Dropbox from preventing unmounting of drives that are currently being backed up. Instead pause backup and allow unmounting. Resume backup when drive is mounted again.
(Same behavior could maybe be implemented for sync (Dropbox folder), but at least for backup of external drives.)
Backblaze does this, so it's clearly possible.
This is such a good suggestion! It’s super frustrating when you can’t unmount a drive because dropbox is holding onto it. Hopefully dropbox considers adding this feature.
