Surprising fix to linux account-linking problem: login via pure text terminal, rather than X desktop
Dear Dropbox folks, I was having difficulty getting Dropbox to work on Linux (Ubuntux 18.04), and had removed and reinstalled the dropbox client without success. Even when I reinstalled the daemon with dropbox start -i, I still never was able to get the message: Starting... To link this computer to a Dropbox account, visit the following url: https://www.dropbox.com/cli_link_nonce?nonce=[some string] I had unlinked the Linux box via the web interface, and I had expected that completely deleting my Dropbox installation, folder, .dropbox and .dropbox-dist dirs would remove any linking info locally on my computer, hence prompting dropbox newly to set up linking to this machine when I started the daemon. However, that didn't happen. That was when I was logged in via a standard graphical desktop, which was a detail that I didn't think was relevant. However, when I logged in remotely to the Linux box via a purely text-based ssh-window, and ran dropbox start from there, suddenly I did get the long sought after "To link this computer" message, along with the link, and that link worked. It seems that somehow the dropbox client is better at asking for machine-linking via a text-only client than when it is run as part of a graphical X Windows desktop? This seems weird, but it appears to be what happened. Anyway, I figured I'd post this, in case anyone else is having similar problems. Raj
Arch Linux Dropbox Gnome app indicator drop down menu
I use Arch Linux as well as many other Linux flavors. Often on Arch with Gnome desktop I had trouble getting the Dropbox drop down menu to look and perform properly. I searched the Internet but really found nothing addressing my problem. I actually gave up on it for a few months. While trying to correct another problem with the app indicator panel I installedlibappindicator-gtk3. It solved the other problem I was working on but I got an added bonus in that the Dropbox drop down menu suddenly started working perfectly as it does on Linux Mint Cinnamon, Debian Gnome and MX Linux Xfce. So just a tip if the Dropbox drop down menu is not performing properly on Arch Linux Gnome, try installinglibappindicator-gtk3 from the Arch repositories. It is in the Arch official extra repository. I think it's possible that this solution could also help on any Arch based distro such as Manjaro,EndeavourOS, etc. if the Dropbox drop down menu doesn't look or perform correctly. I also had the same problem on Fedora Gnome but I don't currently have a free test partition to try this with Fedora.

Best practices for headless installs on small VMs
When I intend to use Dropbox with the headless client on a VM with small amounts of storage, I always have to quickly add folders to the selective sync list so that the downloads don't quickly overload my storage. I could write a script that automatically traverses my Dropbox file directory and adds the folders to be excluded, but it would be much easier if there was simply an option to automatically set all folders to excluded by default so that I can pick and choose which folders actually get sync'ed onto the computer. Does anyone have any best practices or tricks for dealing with a deluge of incoming Dropbox data when the program is first installed?
