Setting up the apps
1604 TopicsI'm trying to install the Dropbox app on my computer, but it randomly stops.
My hard drive had to be replaced recently. I have attempted to download the desktop app in order to restore the dropbox files to my desktop where I typically work on them. The installation process begins then goes nowhere. I started to attempt this fix with the Geek Squad at Best Buy and he could not get it to work. I have attempted many, many times at home but still with no luck - including the off-line download (though I can't say I understand the distinction). My files are clearly still in the cloud and appear to be working on two other devices (phone and IPad). These are the files that are most current for me so it is desperately important for me to get this to work. I even tried downloading a folder thinking I would have to store this work on my hard drive if I could not get the app to work - but each file is Read Only. Unfortunately I have a free account. It provides sufficient storage for the files I use in Dropbox. So I have no access to any support other than this forum. I would consider subscribing to a paid account if that would give me access to someone who could help. I have used Dropbox for years and have never encountered this or any other problem before. Please help if you can.158Views0likes10CommentsMy Dropbox desktop app was updated on my Windows device. Now I can't tell if my content is synced.
OK, so the day I dreaded seems to have finally come. Dropbox rolled out its "new appearance model" to production, bringing the end of the era of status icons overlaid on program icons and, instead, in their own neat little column carved out for themselves. Yes, my Dropbox updated today to version 227.4.4774. 🙄🙄 So, in the process, it apparently had to "re-sync" my files, which took some time. It gave me the whole "you can have your files "Offline," "Available," or "Online Only." I always opt for "Offline." While I love Dropbox, I do not fully trust my files to be resident on your servers and not on my own drive. I just want it for sync. If I want more room, I'll upgrade my hard drive. Anyway, I let Dropbox finish up its little sync party, and I came back to see what you see in the screen capture shown at the following link: (For some reason, this forum wouldn't let me submit my post by using the "Insert Link" option in the editor, which is weird...your developers might want to look into that, too.) The tray icon seemed to indicate that the "sync" was complete, and that my files were "up-to-date." That doesn't appear to be the story my new-found little "column status icons" tell. Some of those indicate that a "sync" is "pending." I gave it some time, I restarted my computer to make sure that any hiccups or belches might otherwise be resolved through that. No dice. It's still showing the same thing. So now I'm confused. Are they synced, or are they not synced? If they're synced, why does it show "sync pending"? If they're not synced, why does the tray icon indicate that my files are "up-to-date"? Help a brother out. I feared this would be a mess.322Views2likes31CommentsRunning macOS from an external system drive – does Dropbox work OK with this setup?
If I boot/run my Mac exclusively from an external system drive, does Dropbox work OK? I imagine that if the drive was removed suddenly, the system would crash before Dropbox had chance to delete (m)any files. Does anyone have experience with this setup? I cannot use the File Provider version of Dropbox because I am already very near to the 500,000 file limit :(34Views0likes3CommentsHow to enable Dropbox desktop notifications on MacBook Air?
When I save files on Dropbox, the icon in the menu bar on the MacBook does show that there is activity. I do have Settings>Allow Notifications for Dropbox enabled to show 'Alerts'. The problem is that I would like to see the larger 'Alerts' on Mac displayed but I'm only getting the small icon on the menu bar activity alert. Please can someone advise me? Thank you in advance.188Views0likes12CommentsAccessing 2 separate accounts from 1 computer
I have 2 Dropbox accounts (separate emails/logins). One is my original personal account and the other I specifically use only in connection with my business (clients send files to this second account). Recently (this year), the Dropbox app disappeared off my computer and access to the files on my original account from my computer (offline) got messed up. That issue was resolved. When I log in to one account, the content on THAT account should exist there and only there. And the other account should be accessible when logged into that account. And I should be able to switch accounts whenever I need to and not lose access to the offline files that have ALWAYS lived ON my computer with no issue (until the problems that began happening in 2025). However, the content on my second account (accessed online/web browser only) appears to have been replaced with the content from my original account. And the desktop app looks like my OFFLINE files are unlinking or getting messed up when switching account online (web browers)—no change made to the login on the desktop app. The logical account access (with separate logins) is not happening. What is the Dropbox solution for accessing the content that is supposed to be on the completely separate second account that has its own unique login?108Views0likes11CommentsCan I have the Dropbox for macOS on File Provider app if my home folder is on an external drive?
I am hoping to get some clarification on the current capabilities of dropbox to support file provider mode on macOS Sequoia. My current set up is such that my home folder is migrated to an external SSD, formatted appropriately in a APFS encrypted. On my dropbox settings, I am constantly asked to update to file provider, but when I go through with this, it seems like nothing actually happens. I am reading conflicting reports that this is still only available to beta testers to which I am not, but the option still exist for me to upgrade to file provider. Is this an error and I'm not eligible? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance114Views0likes6CommentsCertFindCertificateInStore failed with: (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property.
As multiple other users have already reported over the last couple years, I am seeing many of these error events in my Windows 10 Event Viewer, all coming from the DbxSvc (Dropbox service) event source. Can you all please fix your desktop client software to stop spamming my event logs with these errors? This issue has dragged on far, far too long already. Either stop emitting these errors, or fix the underlying problem. Thank you.Solved44KViews10likes100CommentsI updated the desktop app to File Provider, but after logging back in, it's still not updated.
Every time when I try to update to file provider, it starts the update. The App restart and I see "Update in Progress" and then "Log out". After the logon everything is as it was before. Tried it several times, with reboot in between. MAC OS: 15.4.1 Dropbox App: 222.4.504257Views0likes5CommentsWhy am I not eligible for Dropbox on File Provider?
I havea macbook on which I had the dropbox app installed with a different account that was running perfectly well with File Provider. 3 months ago I tried out some other solutions for syncing files and cloud storage so I completely removed the app from my macbook and deleted my account. Since then I have come back to dropbox but it doesn't let me use File Provider anymore. In the settings of the app it says im not eligible to receive the update. This has caused me some issues with online only files that are visible but not openable on my macbook. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to get the app to use File Provider. Does it maybe not want to use File Provider for the duration of my trial? I am thinking about maybe copying the previous version of the app from a Time Machine backup and forcing the File Rpovider like that but it does seem a bit far fetched.Solved182Views0likes7CommentsAfter using the Apple Migration Assistant, I ended up with two Dropbox folders.
I have used Apple's Migration Assistant to move all my content from one Mac to a new Mac. I keep all of my Dropbox files on my computer, so all my Dropbox files are transferred to the new Mac. Now Dropbox is creating a new Dropbox folder and downloading all of my files. How should I best handle this?Solved256Views1like11Comments
