There are some things that make us nervous during Spooky Season, but Dropbox updates are never scary! Check out the updates below and join the conversation in the comments below! Do more with Capture You’ve definitely heard us talking about our beta product, Dropbox Capture, and how you can use it to share feedback. But now, it’s finally out of beta and available to everyone. Capture lets you clearly say what you mean on your own time. Whether you have a Basic, Plus, or Family plan you can capture up to 2 hours (of 1080p video) per recording (or your storage limit, whichever comes first). And even better, you can edit videos that are up to 5 minutes long. Pro, Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise accounts get unlimited 4K recordings (up to their storage limit) and video editing. Start using Capture today to: Reclaim your time: Instantly edit, share, and access your recordings in one place. Make yourself heard: Bring focus and clarity to your message while engaging collaboratively with others on their own time. Build at scale: Create a knowledge database with as many recordings as your storage allows that can be viewed anytime. Since their introduction, file requests make it easy to collect large files from clients and collaborators—simply and securely. How many times have you known all about a file but someone forgot to add you? With this update, any user on a Professional, Standard or Advanced account gets: Password protection: The people uploading files need to input the password beforehand. The ability to resend expired requests: Resend file requests if they have expired. File upload information: View stats around file uploads, such as recipient name, upload status, and number of uploads. Set up file requests now and get access to the files you need. Branded sharing updates to get excited about If you run a business, you know how important branding can be, and now Dropbox makes it easier to be cohesive. Not to scare anyone, but September is just around the corner, and we all know what that means: it's time to transition from summer fun to school and our regular routines. Whether you're a student, teacher, parent, or professional, getting organized can be a challenge. That's where Dropbox comes in! Here are some quick tips to help you use Dropbox to make the transition smooth and stress-free. Organize Your Files Let’s get those files organized. I know we say this a lot, but it matters - A LOT. And checking in regularly means it never gets out of control. After a summer of photos, projects, and maybe even some work documents, your digital life might be a bit messy. We have a few tips below but if ou want a full plan, you can read this guide on How to organize Dropbox files. Take less than an hour and you can: Create folders for different categories: school subjects, work projects, and personal files. Use descriptive names for your files and folders to make searching easier. “Pictures” is too vague to be useful, but “Rafting with the family 2024” is pretty specific and should make searching easier. Archive old files: Move last year's files to an "Archive" folder to keep your current workspace clutter-free. Or, you could be really lazy like me, and move it all to a folder called “tidy” and sort that out when you have time. Sync Across Devices You’ve heard us say it before but Dropbox allows you to access your files from any device, which is perfect for the busy school year. When you install Dropbox on all your devices: your phone, tablet, and computer, then you can; Find all your Dropbox files and folders are right there and ready to use so you can check in easily, without booting up the computer Take photos and videos using your built-in camera and save them directly to your Dropbox, which is helpful if you’ve found yourself scribbling on physical paper lately Make important files available for offline access— Dropbox will automatically upload any changes once you’re back online Share your files with coworkers via links in an email, text messaging, or another app, so everyone is in the loop, even if they’re not at their desk right now. Collaborate with Classmates and Colleagues Group projects and team tasks have many moving parts, and the one thing you should not have to worry about, is sharing files, material and access. Share folders with your project mates Everyone can upload their work, make edits, and stay updated in real-time. If you need a reminder on sharing, we’ve got you! Use Dropbox Paper for collaborative notes. It's a great tool for brainstorming sessions and meeting notes, and we have a bunch of tips to make the most of it here, and you can use the collaborative features, like to-dos and tagging, to keep your project on track! Scan and Store Important Documents No more losing track of important papers! I mean, you can still use it as an excuse if you want but we’ve got you covered. With the document scanner feature of the Dropbox mobile app, you can: - Digitise files in seconds with the camera on your mobile device. Store your syllabus, permission slips, and important notes digitally - Scan files directly to your Dropbox account - Convert existing files to scans - Save each scan securely in cloud storage. Getting back to school and real life in September doesn’t have to be a headache. With Dropbox, you can stay organized, productive, and even have a little fun along the way. Hi everyone, The Dropbox Community team have been busy working on some major updates to the Community itself! So, here is some info on what’s changing, what’s staying the same and what you can expect from the Dropbox Community overall. We are excited to share our side of things, but we want to hear from you, so tell us what you think in the comments below. What’s Changing on the Dropbox Community: These are most of the changes that you may notice in the next few weeks, and there’s more to come, so keep an eye out! What’s under the hood: Essentially, the biggest change here is the platform that the Dropbox Community is built on is getting an upgrade, so a lot of the functionality that you know and love is now part of the site overall. In the past, a lot of those features were customizations, things like the placement of threads, leaderboards, the ideas section and more were essentially hand built by the team. With this upgrade, these features will now be seamlessly integrated, making the platform's code a LOT cleaner and more efficient. The look and feel: As the title implies, we are getting a visual upgrade as well. You can see some samples of that below but overall, the new Community will be cleaner, smoother and easier to navigate. That’s the goal, but of course, let us know if what you’re seeing matches up once we make the changes. Cool New Features to Make the Dropbox Community Even Better: There are some fun new features as part of this update, and while a lot are technical, here are a few you will see pretty easily! Searching by tags: You will be able to search by tags. Pretty self explanatory but a really handy one, you can search by tags so posts that might not have your keyword in the title will still show up when you search. Previously, we’ve had tags and labels but now we are just working with tags so no more doubling up on categories. It’s easier than ever to post: Previously, there were a lot of steps to posting a thread but now it a lot sleeker and simpler. Nested replies are finally here: You can now reply directly to a specific comment - before, comments automatically popped down to the end of the thread, which is not how real conversations happen, but now you can reply directly to a specific comment and the replies are nested under that comment instead of the overall thread. I’ll add an image because it’s so much clearer when you see it, but overall this is a more natural way to chat. Voting from the ideas page: You can now vote for ideas from the menu, without having to click in, so if the title hits hard enough you can vote, and be on your way in no time. Simple! Single page threads: You might have seen that currently our comments on a thread push on to a new page after 10 comments, but now we will have all the comments on one page - so the conversation just keeps going and you don’t get lost. What Hasn’t Changed on the Dropbox Community: The Team Are Still Here to Help: The Dropbox Community team are all still here to help, and while we might be working on a snazzier look and feel, the team are still here and committed to helping you get the answers you need. All of your threads are still here! None of your threads will be lost in the changes here, so there are still a mountain of helpful posts to review, answers to check and conversations to join too. Your Voice Matters: As always, your feedback is invaluable to us. This is your community, and we want it to work for you! So keep sharing your ideas and suggestions—we’re all ears. Why is the Dropbox Community Changing? It was time for a refresh, and the new update means that the upkeep of the website is a LOT less intense - so the load time is quicker, and there should be no code bloat, just a smoother experience for you, and for us. And, to be frank, the old version of the Community website was close to end of life. This new version of the Community also means we can implement new and fun features as they become available. Basically, if the tools work well, we can connect Dropbox Staff and you, our Community members more smoothly, and that means we can be more useful to you. When is This Change Coming? You’ll start seeing the updates within a few weeks. We’re still ironing out a few things, so if you come across any bugs or issues, please let us know right away. Welcome to the Dropbox Community forum! We're thrilled to have you on board, and we want to make sure you get the most out of your Dropbox experience right from the start. Today, we're going to talk about Selective Sync. What is Selective Sync? Well, selective sync is a feature in the Dropbox desktop app that allows you to remove specific Dropbox folders from your hard drive so you can save space on your computer. You can remove the Dropbox folders from your computer without deleting files; the folders you remove from your hard drive remain stored in your account on dropbox.com How to use selective sync Note: To use selective sync, you’ll need to have the Dropbox desktop app installed on your device. To choose which Dropbox folders to store on or remove from your computer’s hard drive: Open your Dropbox desktop app preferences. Click the Dropbox icon in your taskbar. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the top-right corner. Click Preferences. Click the Sync tab. Under Selective Sync (Windows), click Modify or Select folders to sync to this Mac (Mac), click Modify. Check the folders you’d like saved on your hard drive. Uncheck the folders you’d like removed. Click Update. What is the difference between selective sync and online-only? Making your files and folders online-only also helps save hard drive space. These files and folders will still be visible from your computer, but are stored in your Dropbox account online. Based on how you use certain files and folders, they can automatically be set to online-only. That's it! Back in the early 2000’s when we still had computer classes and CD-ROMs, it was really easy to find your files, because you maybe had tens, or maybe even hundreds of files and they were pretty small (size wise, not in terms of impact). Now, however, it seems we can’t exist without creating hundreds of files a week, which is great for recording our most important creations, it does make navigating our files a bit of a nightmare, especially when it comes to work. Now we have windows upon windows, tabs upon tabs, saved files, untitled files. With scattered files and folders, search can be a scattered affair too. So, we set out to build a tool that can help you spend less time searching and organizing all your content, and more time efficiently doing your best work. Overall, you can make search a one step process again. And if universal search isn’t enough, Dash can do more than that too. Get to know Dropbox Replay
Update: We have some exciting new updates about Dropbox Replay, but rather than telling you all about it here, you can check out a new post here. You might have seen us mention Dropbox Replay before, but I don’t think we made it clear just how useful this new video editing tool is. So, here are some updates, some tried and true, some examples and some images to whet your whistle. Dropbox Replay makes it easy to consolidate comments, take action on feedback, and finalize your video and audio projects in one place. Here are some new updates to get you thinking about your own projects: Ability to set password protection on Replay files Right now, both view only, and view and comment shared links can be viewed by anyone with the shared link. Now you will be able to also have the option of adding password protection to your shared links. This means you can upgrade your security for certain files but ensures you can still share with the right people easily. Why not refresh on how to share links? Image and Audio feedback on Replay If you are a video editor, you might prefer to share images or audio for feedback from your clients as pasrt of your creative process. Upload Subtitles/Captions: Replay is launching the ability to support adding subtitles to videos. This will help you to ensure your videos are accessible and inclusive upon delivery. We’ll update you on the details of that soon so keep your eyes peeled! Those are the new features but of course, don’t forget you can already use Replay to: Create a virtual viewing room: Let everyone watch and mark up the same video at the same time—with smooth, high definition video playback that stays in sync for all viewers. Simplify video sharing: Send video and audio out for review with just a link—no more exporting compressed versions and cluttering your hard drive. Get feedback from anyone: Browser-based reviews let anyone provide frame-accurate feedback and on-screen markups—no special software or Dropbox account needed. Take action on feedback: Send revised versions out for review and respond to comments directly from editors including Adobe Premiere Pro, Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve, LumaFusion, and WeVideo. Keep versions under control: Track every version of your video project—including comments and markups for each—in one place. So, let’s imagine you are working on a promo video, no matter what you’re into, gaming, your small business, a recipe - anything at all. Chances are, you will want some feedback before you push it live, so you upload your video and send a link to your friends, family or colleagues. They can come back in their own time with specific feedback, and see each other’s comments (or audio and image feedback now as well) too so it’s a collaborative effort. All of your feedback and updated versions can live in one place, and ensure you push the correct version live when you’re ready. You can even password protect this file to ensure no one sends on the wrong version, and add captions to your files too. Sounds like a good process to me - and trust me, I have definitely clicked send on the wrong file more than once! But you don’t just have to take my word for it, here is a quote from Rachel Jedwood, the Production Officer of the National Rugby League: “We use Replay for our content that requires lots of feedback and iterations, like campaigns with our players and commercial marketing materials. With Replay, we can share our feedback in one place, keep all the conversations documented in the comment threads, and have everything we need for edits and final delivery.” Still need some more convincing? Our own Super User, Lukeyo uses Replay to keep his documentary edits in line too. "Getting towards the end of a recent project, I needed some really specific feedback on very specific sections of the film, and Replay kept that all in one place. I really like ti when something works that simply. When you tick off the feedback in Replay, it‘s ’like ticking off a real life to-do list - when I go shopping and I’ve bought the milk and I never need to think about that again, so it’s finished.” I have to admit, I love the simplicity of that lukeyo!
