All files vanished, but not in Deleted files. Where are they?

I was able to find two spontaneous, mass deletions of more than 8,000 files, which Dropbox quickly restored, but I must still get to the bottom of this. I do not know if the computer is doing this somehow, or Dropbox is doing it. I also have no idea how many other files have not been restored. I found a long string of folder deletions in the Events list. It is very unsettling!
