What does 494 MB mean?
When I click on Drop on the menu bar, I see a list of files being uploaded along with text that says 494 MB. Actually that number keeps changing, but right now it says 494 MB. I know that MB means ...

Hi Droppedintosayhi, the number can fluctuate as the Dropbox desktop application adds up the total amount of files that have been added.
Each file needs to be indexed first, and once that is done, they are synced to the site. Soon, all the files would be indexed, so the number should decrease, provided you're not adding more files into the Dropbox folder to sync.

Dear Hannah:
Thank you for getting back to me. Your reply is not making sense to me. Let me explain.
I copied a number of folders (that all contain subfolders) and pasted them into the Dropbox folder on my Desktop. The combined size of the folders was huge - in the GBs, yet when I look at the number I asked you about it is alternating from 374 MB to 377 MB (going up, down, up, down etc.) . If this number refers to the amount of files left to sync, the syncing would be done in a few minutes. Furthermore, the number should be going down and not up and down, up and down. That number must refer to something else. Take a look at the video available at

I have an unrelated question. How do I stop getting badges when I post a question or a reply? This is precisely why I am not on any social media. All I want to do is get answers to questions, not these silly badges and points. How do I say no to all this drivel?

I am not the only one who hates these badges.

That post helped me figure out how to turn them off.

Dear Jay:
So now I understand what is going on. Those flickering numbers have nothing to do with how much is left to upload because the upload has not even started! Those numbers involve the files that are being indexed. As soon as the indexing is done, then the number that appears there does represent the amount that is left to be uploaded. This distinction was not explicitly made in any of the replies that I received to my post. I suggest that this be added to the FAQ page so that users know what the numbers mean.
Thank you.
Ron
