Silent data corruption is some data on a local hard disk that that the user is unaware has become corrupt at some point in time. Usually due to a hard drive malfunction/power outage/wear and tear/etc.
If Dropbox would flag and notify users of any incoming files that were showing signs of local corruption (e.g. reduced file size compared to online copy with unchanged modification dates) that would go a long way to fighting against silent data corruption.
This feature suggestion would mostly serve users who have selective sync turned OFF.
