Default Share Option should be "View" not "Edit"
Hello,
I am a Dropbox business admin that shares a lot of links with people outside of my organization. I'm not sure when it happened but as some point the default for sharing switched from "View" to "Edit". When you click the "Copy Link" button, it creates an edit link, not a view link. When you click the three dots, then go "Share with Dropbox", and the pop up window appears, the default is "can edit". Furthermore, in the dropbox app (Finder on Mac), the "Copy Dropbox Link" option creates an edit link. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does not want random people being able to upload to my dropbox.
To be sure, I do not want to get rid of "Edit", but making it the default seems an odd choice. This means that even the most diligent of user (myself) accidentally sends Edit links. People who are not diligent send them exclusively.
Thank you!

This idea has been closed as it has reached the end of the Share an Idea process.
Thank you for your suggestion, and if you have another idea to share, please do!

What @torbachkristensen said.
And yes, I was confused about this being a file issue at one time.
It is about folders. It certainly shouldn't allow Edit by default.Besides which, I also can't think why I'd ever want to create a public URL that lets people edit the stuff in my dropbox.

Regarding desktop, when I right click a folder and select "Copy Dropbox link" it creates a link that does NOT grant the "join folder" option, so that is ok. - torbachkristensenExplorer | Level 3
Nancy this has always been only about folders. You can’t even make an edit link for files as far as I can tell, and how would anyone edit a single file?
So this is about folders links only. And it still doesn’t behave as it should, the app defaults to Edit Link.

Thanks for the extra info, torbachkristensen and Dave E.12! If you try to generate a shared link to a file instead (not a folder), are you facing similar issues or is this working as expected on both the mobile and desktop app?

Hi Nancy,
I realise that wasn't pointed at me, but here's a summary of the issue as it currently stands.
This now only happens when sharing a folder (not for a file), I am doing this from the Android app.
I find the folder which I want to send to my client. Hit the tripple dot menu to its right.I select "Share" from that menu.
The app defaults to making a "link for editing" granting the holder the ability to edit the contents. This is dangerous.

Hey torbachkristensen! To make sure I got it right, did you generate a shared link via the desktop/mobile apps and the permissions weren’t set correctly, based on what you’ve opted on your Sharing tab online?
Or did you mean that you don’t have the option to change this setting via the desktop/mobile app instead (except for your Dropbox account online)?

Works in browser, but not in dropbox IOS app or Mac OSX.

Hi all, can you please let us know if it's working properly after changing the default sharing setting?

Seriously, dropbox please change this immediately. Absolute catastrophe.
