Computer Backup
116 TopicsBackup folder name change
Hello! I have 2 macs, one personal and one for work. Both had backup enabled and when I went online, I saw both computers' backup directories. The directories were both in the format of "My Mac (computername)" However, recently I disabled the Dropbox backup on my work laptop because I didn't think it would be wise to backup my work stuff to Dropbox. But I was subsequently told it was OK, so I re-enabled the backup. While everything was uploaded to Dropbox just fine, the name of the work laptop backup directory is now simply "Mac (2)". I would like to rename the folder to the "My Mac" format I previously had, but it is not letting me rename the folder. Any assistance would be great. Thanks in advance.Solved9.1KViews12likes43CommentsI don't see my external drive backup files, even though the backup is completed.
It's my first time using Dropbox Backup and I wanted to backup my external hard drive before I change the settings on it. On the Dropbox Backup homepage, it says backup is completed, but when I click to view backed up files, only my folders are there and nothing else. I've checked on multiple computers and still nothing. Please help.707Views0likes7CommentsI enabled external drive backup, but it says 0K has been backed up.
I am trying to backup an external hard drive to the Dropbox Backup and it says it is up to date but when i click on 'View backed up files' it is saying 0KB and nothing is in there?? Any ideas why this is happening?150Views0likes1CommentI added a folder to Dropbox from the website, but only 200 files got uploaded.
I added one folder from my D drive to my Dropbox backup and it quickly backed up about 200 files and then stopped. Nothing else got backed up. So, I deleted that folder from Dropbox and added it again, with the same result. Can anyone tell me what's going on?558Views0likes10CommentsHow does Dropbox backup differ to the standard syncing?
Hi there, I have implemented Dropbox on my laptop as the folder where I have all my files and folders saved and synchronized in real time. This is what I call the Dropbox memory. Now I learned about Dropbox backups and my question is: What do I need this for? Doesn't it overlap with the "memory" function? When I connected an external hard disk, I was asked if I want to save the files in a Dropbox backup. I clicked YES and now the hard disk files are stored as a backup in the cloud. This is great. So, it doesn't seem to be possible, at least not with a private license, to save the external hard disk files in the same way as I save my laptop hard disk files. So, the backup is a nice alternative. But again: For the files in my laptop hard disk that are saved and synchronized directly under the Dropx box folder, my impression is that a backup doesn't make sense (and even doesn't seem to be possible). Does this more or less make sense? Best Thomas446Views0likes3CommentsDropbox External Drive Backup - Changing Computers
I’ve just found out when you change Laptop / Desktop you can’t continue to use the same external hard drive with Dropbox Backup. This is absolute madness. If you want to continue to use that hard drive with Dropbox Backup you have to re upload the full HD. I have 2TB used on a 4TB external SSD and I’ve just changed to a new MacBook. I’m having to spend three days uploading / backing-up all my data again just to continue to use that same drive with the new device. What a waste of energy, electricity, data and bandwidth. For no reason. My old backup is sitting there in my account with all the same data and I just have to re-upload 2TB of the exact same files for no reason other than Dropbox can’t set up a way to re-link an external hard drive on on a new system. I can’t believe this is the current state of affairs for this service.538Views1like3CommentsDropbox lets me back up the entire Documents folder, but not an individual subfolder.
Hey there! I'm a little new to using dropbox after stopping about a decade ago, the backup feature seems pretty useful to sync files between my devices, but i'm having an issue: I can only tell the dropbox application to backup my entire documents folder. If I try to select an individual folder or folders within the documents folder, it will simply not do anything. I don't seem to have this issue with other folders, if I enter desktop, it lets me select individual folders that are within my desktop, does anyone know what the issue might be?273Views0likes1CommentIs it possible to keep my desktop folder files available in Dropbox (not as a Backup but as synced)?
Before the most recent major update (like a year ago, I'm not sure), I had the location of my Dropbox folder as the desktop folder of my computer. That made it so I could use the desktop to have clear visual representation of the files I was actively working on. After the update, something went wrong, and I was having trouble finding files. I eventually resolved the issue (it involved deleting an extra desktop folder that had been created somewhere), but now my Dropbox location is in a different location (users folder under my username). I want to be able to view the desktop folder of Computer A and on my phone, Dropbox on the Web, or my Computer B should I ever get one. I know there are options for Backup, but I don't think that serves my purpose of needing ready access to those synched files on my other devices or the web. Should I try moving the location of the Dropbox folder to the desktop? Or will that cause other problems? Or is there another solution?Solved659Views0likes3CommentsCan I back up my computer files and have them accessible on other devices?
I recently purchased a new iMac, and would love to set up my desktop the same way as I did with my laptop (also Mac). My primary working files & folders are on my desktop, and are synced to dropbox so that I can also access them elsewhere. I don't recall how I set it up, but after much googling Obviously used Dropbox Backup. How can I get my desktop to function the same way? Much appreciated! I am trying to set up Dropbox Backup, and when I selected Desktop, Documents, and Downloads to be backed up, it told me to disable the iCloud backup of these folders. When I attempted to do that, it said all of my files would be deleted from my computer and stored in iCloud-and any new files or folders would not be stored in iCloud. I want to use Dropbox to backup these files and folders, but do not want all of those files to be deleted from my computer. Any other way to do this?265Views0likes1Comment
