Dropbox Spaces
36 TopicsCan we add comments to folders for collaborating purposes?
Would it be possible to comment on Folders as well as Files from the web interface? Example- I prepare 100 files for my colleague, put them in a Folder on dropbox, then @mention her with a comment like "Here are the files we discussed." Or is there another way to do it?18KViews8likes13CommentsWhy does Dropbox insist on renaming my files?
2020: "Stop renaming my files! (on auto phone upload)" by BoxyBeat https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-installs-integrations/Stop-renaming-my-files-on-auto-phone-upload/td-p/391599 Dropbox response was: "interesting indeed". Then they are like; let us learn what you have uncovered that we still don't know. Like, let's go out there and jump through the hoops together to confirm if the files are named based on when the files are created (recording starts) or when they are last modified (recording stops). What difference does it make? Just stop renaming people's files!? They go on to explain that this is the expected behavior... duh! They never explain why this is, even though the author specifically requested an explanation from Dropbox as to "why" this is. They said they moved the question to the "Share an idea" section. They closed the question for further comments so that anyone who feels the same way about this Dropbox misbehavior can start their own discussion about it, like I'm doing right now, and we can all pretend that no one really wants this "feature", because the discussion activity is low and no one is voting. They even go as far as closing supposedly "shared ideas" for lack of support by other members of the community of users, before it even has a chance to reach the right team at Dropbox, Inc. With so many filters along the way, I would be surprised if any Dropbox features is ever a direct result of user input. Dropbox has its own fixed ideas of how to do things, and that's how it's going to stay. Like it and use it, or don't like it and move on to using something else. This is the example of a shared idea that has been closed due to lack of support. 2021: "Stop renaming files" by Pete3000 https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-ideas/Stop-renaming-files/idi-p/510186 Allow such ideas to stay open for a good while and see what happens. You will never get enough votes if you keep closing ideas and keep closing discussions. You will always blame it on lack of interest by other users, and users will keep creating new topics for the same old discussions, and keep sharing the same old ideas without it ever being forwarded to the right team at Dropbox, Inc. It's so obvious right now that you are genuinely not interested in what we users have to say or what we think of your apps and services. Not when you keep shutting us off, closing our topics of discussion and keep closing our "shared" ideas before they can gather enough votes and traction, and before they ever reach the right team. You're doing this on purpose. And that's OK. It's your product and your service. I just wanted to call you out and let you know that I can see through your charade and I don't agree with your practices. So let us have it... why are you changing the names of our files? And more importantly, why are you not allowing us to decide for ourselves if we want your app to change the name of our files or not? There is a way to set up naming conventions with Dropbox, but it does not apply to the mobile app and camera uploads. It applies only to the web and the desktop app (the option links back to the web for setting it up, there is no interface for it within the desktop app itself). "How to use naming conventions in Dropbox" https://help.dropbox.com/files-folders/sort-preview/naming-conventions Despite this advanced and elaborate way to exactly specify how to name and organize files in Dropbox (as long as you're not using the mobile app), and despite having several preset naming rules to choose from, having no rule at all is not a selectable rule or option. I am very disappointed with Dropbox right now. It feels like with each passing year I have less and less reason to use Dropbox. You have already reduced the number of devices allowed to sync from 5 to 3 (if I remember correctly) on the free plan. I wouldn't actually mind getting a premium plan if you did things a little differently and you got rid of the excess bulk you have invented in recent years like Paper, Transfer, Vault, Spaces, and what not, the list keeps growing. Dropbox has moved well beyond what used to be its core business idea, and it's far from working ideally, and I don't want to be paying for the things I don't intend to use.Solved13KViews13likes21CommentsHow to remove spaces from Dropbox folder names (spaces causing issues)
Hi There, We need to run Bitnami web stacks but the path contains spaces because of the Dropbox folder name. How do we rename the folders so there aren't spaces? Or if we unsubscribe from Dropbox for business (we've found it kind of painful in practice) will the personal dropbox folder name get renamed to 'Dropbox' (without spaces/brackets)? Cheers BenSolved11KViews2likes9CommentsCan't read .txt file with HTML Viewer on New phone
Since upgrading to my new phone, Moto G4 Plus running Android 6.0.1, I cannot open a .txt file from my Dropbox using the built in HTML Viewer. My previous phone was running Lollipop. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ezap5v0cos0wau8/Screenshot_20170212-090528.png?dl=0 I can open them with other apps from Dropbox including the Dropbox Text Editor or the App Docs, but for my purposes, the HTML viewer is perfect for my what I need. The Dropbox Text Editor double spaces everything and Docs converts it and then saves in Google Drive. I guess I can look for another app, but I would prefer not too.Solved10KViews0likes10CommentsCreate a new Google Colab notebook in the Dropbox folder
Hi people! It is great that now we can create a new Google Doc/Sheet/Slides directly in dropbox. It would be fantastic if we could also create a new Colab notebook. Any plan in that direction? all the best, leonardoSolved8KViews4likes2Commentssharing files and folders with non team members
Greetings to all, Using a business standard account, I would like to create different spaces to share files and folders with specific team members as well as non-members. Typically: Top-level ----> sharedspace1 (john, peter, mary, teammember1) ----> sharedspace2 (jane, peter, teammember1, teammember2) ----> sharedspace3 (peter, chris) When sharing a file (within a shared folder) with non-team members, each non-team member receives an (email) invitation and link to access said file Before the non-member can access the file, he is asked to merge it with his personal dropbox account 1/ Is there a way for non-team members to access shared files / folders without having to merge with their personal Dropbox? 2/ If they do merge with the personal Dropbox: a/ Are any subsequent edits to yhe file from others automatically synced? b/ How can we be sure that third parties do not have access to other files / folders of the personal Dropbox? When a non-team member creates and shares a file / folder (within the shared space), an email can be sent for accessing the file/folder but the file/folder is not created in a shared space; rather, it is created under the private space (purple) of the Team. It can not be seen by non-administrator in the hierarchy. Since a non-member is the owner of the file/folder, it cant be moved into a shared space - not even by the administrator. The error is 'The owner of this shared folder isn't a member of the Team.' 1/ Is there a way to force files / folders created by non-members to live in a specific directory (in a shared space)? Thanks!Solved7.9KViews1like6CommentsRender Markdown files and if there is a README.md in a folder do something smart to have it rendered when viewing that folder.
More and more people are using the README.md convention for describing what's this folder is all about, especially when shared with teams for work, or school or little projects. So besides the obvious that you need to be able to render .md files we could also have render under the file list the rendered version of README.md if exists in that particular folder.7.7KViews9likes6CommentsSharing of Overlay Icon/ Hack
Hi I would like to ask why you at Dropbox dont find a way to share/merge the overlay icon wiht other app's using similar icons? instead of trying ot overtake them all...? breaking other apps for no good reason ! We now get a reminder from dropbox app, to reinstall, to fix settings as I moved dropbox icons lower down in the list of overlay icons. We use other more important app's where we want icons to show, for example SVN, and it's rather anoying that; if dropbox get's it's will, it takes over the top position by inserting several spaces before the name... Rally ? Since windows still have this limitation of 15 icons, why not reuse whatever is there? they all look more or less the same ? or limit the use to 4-5 icons, red/gree, blue is even actually plenty thats 3, or even just ask the userif they wish to use a shorter set of icons. Maybe even a 4'th one, that could be a generic one for all other stuff. Please consider solving it, so we dont have to keep pushing dp icons down on the list anyway, and thereby losing them all together. Maybe have a talk with ms, and have them solve it in their end, after all how hard can it be ! long-time Dropbox Basic user here (tho did the Pro for about a year once), along with my wife who continues touse Pro. i'm getting tired of using "bandaid" solutions for our ever-growing data space needs. by that i mean, every year or two having to purchase bigger/multiple external hard drives for it all; not to mention the hassel of having to have double the need for "backups"; plustired of having drives fail & the hassel of fixing/replacing. SO, i'm starting to research Cloud-based solutions. wondering if we can just finally do-away with all the external drives & just rely on a Cloud solution - not only to store & have access to all the data that won't fit on our little MacBook & MacBook Pro SSD drives, but to also rely on it's redundency/auto-backup in case something goes wrong in the Cloud with the primary access point. yes, i know this would require Internet access any time we want/need to interact with our data - that's not a problem (for us). after researching about ones like CrashPlan, BackBlaze, etc, & even straight up Amazon something'or'other, it dawned on me to look & see if Dropbox could accomodate our desires here. we've been using Dropbox already for years & have been very happy with it. it's been a smooth'n'seemless integration on our Mac's & iOS devices. but it's never been a place we've considered for "mass storage" because everything that's in our DB's is also synced & resides on our computers. then my wife discovered the "Selective Sync" feature in her Pro account, and that got me to wondering if it's possible to somehow send all our data (currently aprox 6TB) up to DB & use Selective Sync to make sure it's not ALL trying to sync with our computers. but in what i've read thus far, it's NOT possible to sync an external drive up to DB. i've also read that DB will not provide a "seed" drive via the mail like others (CrashPlan) does. so, before i start to strategize HOW to make this happen, i guess i need to know IF this is possible at all --> ??? seemsto me that i should be able to subscribe to a Dropbox Business account that both my wife & i can be members of; then i suppose i would have to little-by-little copy data from the external drives over to my Mac's DB sync folder. then when i've used as much precious SSD space on my Mac as i can spare, turn on the Selective Sync option for all that; then delete, rinse, & repeat until it's all up there. another question comes to mind --> can't i create a "Symlink" of my Mac's DB folder to an external drive to save the steps'n'time of the above scenario??? next, regarding DB Business's "unlimited space" (a.k.a. "As much space as needed"), i read... https://www.dropbox.com/help/225 ...that indicates my wife & i would only get 1 TB of space, then we'd have to contact DB for more!!!!! WTF is THAT all about?!?! i don't want to have to contact support, sales, or anybody when i hit that 1tb limit (which i will, at least 6 times right off the bat). if it's truly "unlimited" then it should just be unlimited. am i misunderstanding something here??? additionally, i notice on the "Pricing" page, Business shows "$12.50 / user / month". does that mean for my wife & i, it would be $25/mo? what if we don't need any "teams" or "groups" nor any additional "spaces"? we just need ONE dropbox location we can sync everything to so both of us have access to it. but we'd need to keep our respective DB account areas that only sync to each of our Macs (mine for me + hers for her + one shared). does that all make sense? FYI, in case it's a perceived issue... both my wife & i work from home with our own businesses, so it would be "for business" more than personal use. THANKS!!! -jason.Solved6.1KViews0likes4Comments
