Folders
227 TopicsI need advice and have questions on folder structures in Dropbox Business
Hi all -- our small organization is a long-time Dropbox user. As such, our file structure predates when Dropbox added Team folders. Currently, all shared folders and each staffer's individual folder is nested under MY folder (as I'm the admin) since that's how it used to work. I know I need to take the time to reorganize our file structure to work with team folders but had a few questions. (FYI we are currently grandfathered under an old Standard plan but I'm likely to change over to Business as it's the same price and has a few more features). I appreciate any feedback on the following questions. Can I move the existing folders out from under my folder and convert them into Teams folders, or do I have to create the equivalent Teams folder and manually move everything? Do people recommend having one main Team folder for a whole organization, and then create subfolders under it for different user groups, or do you recommend having a separate Team folder for each user group (for example, one team folder for all staff, one team folder for senior staff, or all nested together)? The "personal folder" that Dropbox Business creates -- as far as I can tell, unless I upgrade to Business Plus, I have no access to it as the admin. Which means if a staffer leaves, our organization loses anything they have stored in their personal folder? (Right now because I create a "personal" folder for them under My folder, we still retain access to those files when someone leaves). If I have no admin access, this makes me very uncomfortable as often people will save work files in their named user folder if it's something nobody else needs access to -- but it's still a work file and we want to retain it. People shouldn't be saving truly personal stuff on their work systems anyways. Is there any way to turn off the creation of this "personal folder" when you create a new user? Thank you for any advice or suggestions - I appreciate them in advance.6Views0likes1CommentWhat tool does Dropbox use to zip folders for download?
Summary: I’m trying to figure out how to create a usable zip file out of files that have non-ASCII filenames, so I’d like to find out what zip tool Dropbox uses when I download a folder from Dropbox. Background: It turns out that most zip-file-creation tools cause problems when you try to zip a file that has a non-ASCII filename. But when I download a folder from Dropbox that contains files with non-ASCII filenames, the folder arrives on my computer in the form of a zip file that correctly includes those files. So whatever tool Dropbox is using (internally) to automatically create zip files for download is doing exactly what I want to do. Workaround: If I want to zip a folder, I can upload it to Dropbox and then download it. That works, but it takes a lot of bandwidth and time. Question: So I’d like to find out what zip-file-creation tool Dropbox is using to create zip files for download, in hopes that I can use that same tool (or something similar) on my local computer, to be able to correctly zip non-ASCII filenames without having to upload and download to and from Dropbox. So do any of you know what Dropbox uses to create zip files for download? thanks, —Jed108Views0likes3CommentsHelp with keyword automation on a shared folder
I have tried adding automation to a shared folder. It doesn't seem to do anything so I am curious if I am misunderstanding the feature. I have a main input folder that receives a folder with file(s) on regular basis. These folders have a standard naming convention of FirstName LastName Timestamp (yyyy-mm-dd HH_MM_SS) LocationName (example: John w Smith 2025-01-28 20_23_29 Main Office) The main input folder also contains subfolders with for each location. My goal is to have the folders moved from the input folder into the location folder. I added the automation: When files are added to "Intake Folder" then organize into folders grouped by Customer filters Keyword "Main" move files to "Main Office Intake." The folder is not moved. I do have permission to edit the folder. I am part of a team on the Advanced plan. When I look at the folder on a different computer/browser, it looks like the folder is not automated. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!Solved35Views0likes3CommentsI'm trying to download large folders from the web, but not all of them are downloaded.
I have a large folder full of (other smaller folders filled with) videos files that I am trying to download and store on an external harrd drive to have a backup of these videos. In total, it comes to ~7 Tb. I have tried downloading each of the smaller folders one at a time but this often results in not all of the videos files downloading. Does anyone know of a better way to do this? Thank you in advance!12Views0likes1CommentI have two Dropbox folders on my Windows machine
I somehow have Dropbox in two locations C\Users\Doug\Dropbox (190GB - 302456 files - 22,746 folders) AND D\Dropbox (2.73GB - 290 files - 18 folders) When I went to the dropbox icon in the task bar\clicked my avatar\Preferences\Sync Tab\Move but when I did it showed the location as the D\Dropbox location. What I want to do is move the C\Users\Doug\Dropbox to the D Drive but do not know to do so as it is not an option under the Sync tab - Move. Would appreciate any help getting Dropbox moved from my C drive to the D drive. I am using Windows 10. Thanks!40Views0likes4CommentsCan I rename the Dropbox folder to flatten the Dropbox folder path?
Hello Dropbox community! Does anyone know if this possible? Can I take my existing folder path and flatten out the folder path? I would like to rename my "Dropbox" Name to Folder1 Existing - C:\Users\Name\Dropbox\Folder2 Proposed - C:\Folder1\Folder2 The end goal is to zip the "Folder1" and extract it to a computer that doesnt have dropbox and the contents of Folder 2 is linked to the "C:\Folder1\Folder2" Directory. Thank you everyone!22Views0likes1CommentFull filepath for file
Dear team Searching for files (e.g. by name) on the iOS app is very quick and good. However, once found, it would be great if we could see the full filepath of that resulting folder or file (e.g. C:\Dropbox\.... ) so that it can be quickly found on my laptop or desktop machine. Can you add this feature please? (Under the iOS app, you can select 'Show in Folder' via the three dots next to the file, but this still doesn't give visability of the full path.) Thanks if you can help.50Views0likes4CommentsAdd detailed folder description to Dropbox Replay folders
It should be possible to add a description to folders within Dropbox Replay. This could be in the form of a text box at the top of the folder, where the admin can input a few lines of text, providing general info or workflow instructions which streamlines the collaboration process.37Views0likes3CommentsBring back the blue-folder folder thumbnails
Dropbox, please allow users to choose the plain blue folders for folder thumbnails. The photo-collage folder thumbnails introduced about 2 years ago are distracting and randomly irrelevant to folder content. At least make the blue-folder thumbnail an option. Thank you!21Views1like3Comments
