You can reset the file path for these folders with the steps below:
- Navigate to the system's Desktop/Downloads/Documents folders via the File Explorer (not the folders in Dropbox).
- Right click the folder and choose "Properties".
- Go to the "Location" tab.
- Choose to reset the default folder path.
If you're having trouble locating these folders, they would be under the path C:/users/[your username]/
If you have any trouble with these steps then please let me know the exact step that you're running into issues. You can send along a screenshot too if relevant.

Thanks for clarifying that TitanxD!
The "My PC" folder doesn't mean that the Dropbox app has backed up the entire computer to Dropbox.
Within this folder, you will see the computer folders that had synced with Dropbox.
Since you mentioned that you already reset the default folder path for Download and Documents, can you move the files from within those folders in Dropbox (Dropbox > My PC > Downloads/Documents), back to the original locations on your computer?
Also, do you have any other folders showing within the "My PC" folder?

Hi,
I'm having the exact same problem with my files.
I tried reseting the path like you wrote above but for some reason i'm getting the following error message when trying to do so:
"
The folder can not be moved here, Unable to redirect text structure, please select another destination path "
Thanks for the help

Hi yotamr30, could you go to the Dropbox desktop application preferences, and then click on the Account tab. Press Alt+H, and then click 'Reset OS folders locations' to see if this helps?
Keep me updated with any progress!

I have already deleted the drop box application, but there is still a folder named drop box with my desktop, documents and downloads in it...
- reagananthony784 years agoExplorer | Level 3I so hoped that would have worked 😞
When I select the folder from its original location and right click and go to preferences it shows it being as it should be. There is no location button but it looks like it's in the right place. However, when I left click to select it, I get an error message that the file has been moved. I took some screen shots but I don't know how to attach them to this message.- Daphne4 years agoDropbox StaffYou should be able to attach the screenshot using the camera icon just above the reply box here reagananthony78.
Also, could you try these steps to see if we can reset the folder paths a different way?- Click the Dropbox icon in your system tray.
- Click the profile pic/initials icon in the top right of the window.
- Choose "Preferences..."
- Go to the "Account" tab.
- Hold the keys "Alt+H".
- Click the option "Reset OS folders".

There is the word "Location" but not tab with Location. The word is not clickable. What now?
- Walter4 years agoDropbox Staff
In that case, could you click on the 'Advanced' button and then navigate to the 'Location' tab ryanjames?
It should be the 4th tab from left to right.

Still not seeing what you think I should be seeing. This is the properties and then the second box is what comes up after the ADVANCED box. What am I missing?

I have the same problem and i can`t change the location file to default because i got this error : can`t redirect into reparse point, please choose different target path.

Hi Daphne,
I saw your post, I am having difficulty in probably getting the correct file path, I want to remove Dropbox from my C drive, that too without having to format the hard drive. I saw your instructions but am not able to get to location - I think I`m doing it wrong. Can you please send me screen shots on how to do it and restore the file path to my regular C drive - I am using windows 10 home version, and have inserted a screenshot for reference.
Thanks
Vivek

There is no location tab. I have uninstalled your program yet there are remnants of its existence. What do I need to do to restore my pc and eliminate any traces dropbox ever existed.
I get the same error for can't redirect into resparse point, chose a different path. Windows knows the original and your software is blocking it.
need a fix

Having the same problem here. This is kind of ridiculous and will definitely not be using dropbox ever again. This should not be such an issue.
Edit: I figured it a workaround that will placate some of us that had this issue. After going to the "location" in the "documents property"---you can just create a new location with a small change such as C:\Users\(your user name)\Documents1 and or however you want to rename a new folder to create...move items and then you now have that silly dropbox link gone. How invasive of dropbox without an easy out. Still do not plan to use dropbox out of frustration.

I no longer want to use DropBox. How do I drop Remove the /DropBox as above? And, can I deactivate the account? I don't like it that when files are deleted in DropBox they disappear from everywhere. Thank you.

Hi pambarnes01, have you followed these steps to disable the computer backup feature?
- MONTSERRAT RED CROSS3 years agoNew member | Level 2
Thank you for the response. It seemed to have worked for the Documents folder but I am not sure yet if it has worked for the desktop or the downloads folders. "Can't redirect into reparse point, please choose a different path path."

Sorry for jumping in, MONTSERRAT RED CROSS.
Just to clarify, have you disabled the computer backup feature altogether?
Can you send me a screenshot of what you see when going to your desktop app preferences > Backups tab?

Is there any instructions for Mac users?
- Jay2 years agoDropbox Staff
Hi acej, have you enabled the computer backup feature? What happens if you try to disable it?

It is disabled and the 'ghost' files still appear. Thanks.

I have moved my Dropbox path to my D drive because it was making my computer super slow. Now, how do I remove the files from my C: drive without deleting them in dropbox?

Did you use the option in Dropbox Preferences to move the Dropbox folder? If so, it automatically moves your Dropbox folder and all the files within it.
- Lifesavingsfinancial2 years agoNew member | Level 2I did use the move feature but I still see all the files and can access them on my C drive
