What does 494 MB mean?
When I click on Drop on the menu bar, I see a list of files being uploaded along with text that says 494 MB. Actually that number keeps changing, but right now it says 494 MB. I know that MB means megabytes, but in this context what does it mean? Is it a rate?
Hi Droppedintosayhi, the number can fluctuate as the Dropbox desktop application adds up the total amount of files that have been added.
Each file needs to be indexed first, and once that is done, they are synced to the site. Soon, all the files would be indexed, so the number should decrease, provided you're not adding more files into the Dropbox folder to sync.

Hey Droppedintosayhi, thanks for dropping in!
This number refers to the amount of files remaining to sync.
So, in your case, there's still 494 MB of files left to sync.
I hope this helps, but let me know if you have any questions.

Dear Hannah:
Thank you for getting back to me. Your reply is not making sense to me. Let me explain.
I copied a number of folders (that all contain subfolders) and pasted them into the Dropbox folder on my Desktop. The combined size of the folders was huge - in the GBs, yet when I look at the number I asked you about it is alternating from 374 MB to 377 MB (going up, down, up, down etc.) . If this number refers to the amount of files left to sync, the syncing would be done in a few minutes. Furthermore, the number should be going down and not up and down, up and down. That number must refer to something else. Take a look at the video available at

I have an unrelated question. How do I stop getting badges when I post a question or a reply? This is precisely why I am not on any social media. All I want to do is get answers to questions, not these silly badges and points. How do I say no to all this drivel?
