Photo backup on iPhone isn’t working
I’ve been using Dropbox to backup my iPhone and noticed recently it’s been really slow. Last night I went to back it up again but it just said it was starting photo backup, but it still hasn’t found any photos or videos.
I’ve restarted the app, my phone and turned off photo backup and left it before trying again, I’ve tried airplane mode with WiFi. I’ve tried using my data, but it’s not finding anything. Or doing anything. I’ve been using Dropbox alongside iCloud and haven’t had any problems until this. I’ve used about 6% of the 2tb storage I’ve got.
Any help on this?
Thanks

Agreed. Users have reported this issue in detail over the last several months, but Dropbox has not prioritized a fix. The only workaround is to log out and log back in again (but this only works if you keep the app open - the second you close it, the same issue happens).
To pay a full annual subscription for a tool that's not working seems wrong.- Em_6Collaborator | Level 8
k_svensson have you noticed when you have to sign back in, the camera upload option isn't there? I didn't have that problem until this issue had already been going on for a while. I have to go through to the Account / camera uploads manually. not that big of an issue, but its just another problem.
that and some files are duplicates, and others just aren't there. that bothers me more than having to sign in and out. is anybody else having these problems or is this separate?
thanks

Hi, iOs app (v 238.2.2) on iOs 14.4.2 on an iPhone XR was no longer uploading photos.
--> cleared the cache --> it now says "analyzing photo library" (not sure of the exact translation, mine is in French "Anaylise de la bibliothèque") forever and does not upload photos either.
--> deleted the app, reinstalled it --> it found the new photos and started uploading them --> phone went into sleep after a few minutes (as it is supposed to do) and when I woke it up, Dropbox is stuck again at "analyzing photo library"
Any idea ?
- MeganDropbox StaffHey Hugo D.3, welcome to our Community!
Remember that the initial sync after a Dropbox app upgrade will normally take a little longer.
You'd have to set aside 30 minutes to an hour for that.
If the issue remains after this time-frame, give me a shout.
Also KerryL28 would it be okay for me to send you an email, so we can have a closer look into this, please?

Thanks for the answer. It now seems that with only a few photos left to upload, the app manages to analyze the library then upload if given enough time.
I'll see how it goes with more photos and vidéos.
- Em_6Collaborator | Level 8Update on where it’s at and to anybody who’s having this issue:
I’ve been in contact with the specialist team since around the time I made this thread. They said they’re aware of the issue and are working on it, but as it stands the couple of updates I’ve had haven’t worked.
That probably means we can’t do anything about it until there’s an update that does but I’d like to know if any updates have worked for anybody / what they did different after an update for it to work so I can try that.
The advice I was given from them for after an update was to clear cache, uninstall, turn phone off and on (not restart) and install the app again. Not really anything I haven’t heard here.
They said it was caused by the iOS update by Apple where they changed security settings.
So anybody who’s updates it’s worked for, please let me know what you did. Thanks

Hey Em_6, thanks for posting on our Community and happy Friday!
I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with this. Let's have a look now.
Could you please see if clearing the app's cache helps improve matters? To do so:
1. Navigate to the “Personal” tab
2. Tap the gear icon in the upper-left corner of the screen
3. Select “Clear Cache”
Once this is done then please ensure you log out of the Dropbox application, then restart your device and log back in again.
Let me know how it goes!- Em_6Collaborator | Level 8Thanks for your reply that helped, kind of.
It seems to only work slowly now when I log out and back in each time. I have to leave the app open on screen otherwise it stops working and I have to log in and out.
Could this be to do with the latest update?
Thanks- Em_6Collaborator | Level 8Also: when I go to the camera upload folder, it’s going crazy flashing from several months ago, to weeks, to saying it’s empty then something it’s managed today then repeating like that.
- Em_6Collaborator | Level 8Anybody?
- Em_6Collaborator | Level 8I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it’s exactly the same. Would really appreciate some advice

Hey Em_6, sorry to jump in here, let me ask: does this issue affect all photos and videos, or only some?
Can you include a screenshot of the Camera Uploads settings in the Dropbox app, and also one of the Dropbox permissions settings on your device?
You can find this by opening the “Settings” app on your iPhone, and then tapping “Dropbox.”
Waiting for your reply, cheers!

There was another thread on this I tried to join but couldn’t add to.
I have just started my professional plan. I only got this to resolve an issue I am having anyway with getting photos off my iPhone 8 Plus.
I have a fully updated phone and presumably app as I literally just downloaded it.
I have selected a large number of photos to upload - but it’s not doing anything.
Help please.- MeribelmanExplorer | Level 4
Hi
I have happily and successfully used dropbox photo back up forever! My iphone 12 Pro iOS 14.5.1 128GB is now not behaving well between Photos and Dropbox camera uploads. Signed in and on opening the Photos tab in the Dropbox app tells me "looking for photos". this is as far as it gets.
If I uninstall Dropbox app completely, reinstall, sign in, and then try - it works. But I must stay with the app and keep the screen active. Any change and it goes back to "looking for photos". Then a repeat of the uninstall / reinstall process is required for it to work again.
There is no background back up at all.
Any advice most welcomed. Many thanks
- MeganDropbox StaffHey Meribelman, thanks for posting your question here!
I've merged your post under this thread, since it echoes what others have also mentioned.
Can you try Walter's steps shown here, and let me know if this works out for you?
- MeganDropbox StaffHey Ilona_S, I hope you're doing well!
I've merged your question under this similar thread.
Have you tried connecting to a different WiFi network or through cellular data?
Also, feel free to take a look into the previous troubleshooting steps, and let me know if any of them resume your Camera Uploads.
Cheers!- AbufinzioHelpful | Level 6
hello, i have this problem too on my ios device
- ios is updated
- dropbox cache cleared
- dropbox was reinstalled (yes, to the latest version...)
after all those helpdeskish useless things can you please release a dropbox update with the old uploader while you fix the new one?
thank you
p.s. to upload the photos that were not retrieved by the automatic (broken) backup i used the manual one and another BIG problem has occured: heic photos have been converted to jpeg, that is not good (no, the file format option in the settings is for the automatic backup, no for the manual upload)
if i upload something to dropbox MUST REMAIN THE SAME, not a byte should be modified, for photos and video tooto move some photos i had to use google drive...
