Questions before moving to external drive and new Mac OS app
I'm tired of playing whack-a-mole on my files to stay within the limits of my 1 TB laptop drive. I have a Crucial X10 Pro (read/write 2000 MBps) 2 TB drive that I would like to move all my Dropbox storage too.
- Are there any pain points I should expect if I do this? I found this comment on reddit but it sounded outright insane and on one replied, so I don't know if it's accurate or not:
External drives have a tendency to cause dropbox to delete content when they aren't mounted. Dropbox see the folder as missing, interprets that as the folder was deleted then deleted the content on the cloud side.
2. I currently have the older version of Dropbox installed. Should I upgrade? Last I checked there seemed like a lot of downsides to upgrading so I held off. I did a search but all the results were from a couple years ago. Any advantages yet to upgrading?
Thanks
- Jay

Hi David H.78, thanks for messaging the Community.
In general, there are risks when moving to an external hard drive for your Dropbox content, as listed in this thread, and unexpected dismounting can result in data deletion.
Regarding the support on Mac OS for external drives for file provider, this article should help provide more information.
If you have any further queries, feel free to message back.
