Dropbox and Boxcryptor - can't access my Thesis files anymore.
Dear Community,
I have a serious problem and hope somebody can help me:
I am working since month on my diploma thesis, all files for that stored under Dropbox in a directory encrypted with boxcryptor classic, which I made visible as drive "K". Since two days I cannot open any of my files anymore. Word, Excel etc. all tell me, that the documents cannot be read and maybe corrupted. If I try to use Windows explorer to copy one of these files from the boxcryptor drive "K" to any local directory, explorer tells me that he source file or the source drive could not be opened - but it is full visible in explorer and Boxcrypter opens up the encrypypted directory with my password w/o any complains.
I have not changed anything in my installation. How can I get access to my files again?
I am using boxcryptor classic v 1.3.2 and dropbox client v213.4.4597.
I really need your help!
Thanks
Kathleen

Hey KathleenKnickrehm, thanks for posting here today!
Just to make sure we're on the same page: is the content you're having trouble with inside your Dropbox folder?
Would you be able to send over a screenshot of the error you get when trying to open your files, please?
Keep me posted and we'll take it from there!

Hi Mark,
thanks for that quick reply! Yes the content is inside my dropbox folder. I created in that a subdirectory as a boxcryptor encrypted directory a loooong time ago. and with boxcryptor then I made that boxcryptor directory visible as drive "K"

The screenshots would be in German (I am living in Germany...) ... is that Ok?

Sorry, hi Megan :-)...

One more input: If I try to open a Word file with Windoes Editor (should at least show something) I get the following error message, which translates into "A device connected to the system does not work". Looks like trying to retrieve the files through boxcryptor and dropbox leads to "no access"...

Hey KathleenKnickrehm, thanks for the added info!
If you momentarily pause Boxcryptor, are you able to open these files without any issues, or no? What if you try this with Dropbox next?
I'd just like to see how these files behave when none of these apps are accessing them.

Hi Megan,
if I pause Boxcryptor, means the K drive is not anymore available, I can open the file in the respective boxcryptor directory with Windows editor and it shows me at least some non readable characters... What do you mean with "try this with Dropbox next"?

Same if I stop Dropbox and use my "offline made available" files
- MeganDropbox Staff
Hey KathleenKnickrehm, does this happen only with available offline files, or online-only too?
- KathleenKnickrehmNew member | Level 1
Need to make some files "online only" first...
I had all files marked as "make avail offline"
Give me a few minutes... - KathleenKnickrehmNew member | Level 1
That's weired: I started Dropbox again and it then has synchronized all 1000+ files. If I now try to access an "only online available" file within the boxcryptor directory even w/o boxcryptor running I get the following error, which translates to "Cannot open file. Something has not worked" ...

Maybe it's a good idea to ask "boxcryptor" for help.
