Default Share Option should be "View" not "Edit"
Hello,
I am a Dropbox business admin that shares a lot of links with people outside of my organization. I'm not sure when it happened but as some point the default for sharing switched from "View" to "Edit". When you click the "Copy Link" button, it creates an edit link, not a view link. When you click the three dots, then go "Share with Dropbox", and the pop up window appears, the default is "can edit". Furthermore, in the dropbox app (Finder on Mac), the "Copy Dropbox Link" option creates an edit link. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does not want random people being able to upload to my dropbox.
To be sure, I do not want to get rid of "Edit", but making it the default seems an odd choice. This means that even the most diligent of user (myself) accidentally sends Edit links. People who are not diligent send them exclusively.
Thank you!

I like this idea, but would say it should be View or Copy, or Edit. And if someone drops the same named file into a shared folder where that file is marked View only, it should create a new copy, and add "v2" (or something similar) to the file name.

For a company so many people depend on, it’s ridiculous that edit is the default option.

Should default to View -- although would be nice if you could set up in your settings (profile) whether you want to "change default to Edit" when sharing a file so if you're always sharing in Edit mode, you could easily do it.

I agree. I use Dropbox to distribute photos to participants in events. I do not want to give them Edit privileges to these folders. View should be default.

I use dropbox share links to share course documents with students. I right-click on the item and choose 'Copy Dropbox Link.' Suddenly this morning it started giving them edit links instead of view links, requiring them to sign up for Dropbox and get my permission to access the document one at a time. Dropbox also made me log in again to give the permission, and enter an access code.
Something that used to be a simple, indispensable part of my routine became a frustrating boondoggle for all of us. I vehemently support going back to the default 'view' links.

Since my last comment, I have had students edit two documents that I thought I had shared in 'view' mode, and discovered that not only is it apparently impossible to share my most important pdf in 'view' mode but that this seems to be true for all my pdfs. Are other commenters able to share pdfs in view mode?

I agree with everyone here, this really should be something you can change in your settings.

I'm just here to express my concurrence with the original post and my absolute disgust that somewhere along the line the default was set to "can edit." I use dropbox a lot and there is zero reason I would ever want anyone to edit the files or folders that I share.
