Dropbox Backup
245 TopicsBackup folder name change
Hello! I have 2 macs, one personal and one for work. Both had backup enabled and when I went online, I saw both computers' backup directories. The directories were both in the format of "My Mac (computername)" However, recently I disabled the Dropbox backup on my work laptop because I didn't think it would be wise to backup my work stuff to Dropbox. But I was subsequently told it was OK, so I re-enabled the backup. While everything was uploaded to Dropbox just fine, the name of the work laptop backup directory is now simply "Mac (2)". I would like to rename the folder to the "My Mac" format I previously had, but it is not letting me rename the folder. Any assistance would be great. Thanks in advance.Solved9.1KViews12likes43CommentsI don't see my external drive backup files, even though the backup is completed.
It's my first time using Dropbox Backup and I wanted to backup my external hard drive before I change the settings on it. On the Dropbox Backup homepage, it says backup is completed, but when I click to view backed up files, only my folders are there and nothing else. I've checked on multiple computers and still nothing. Please help.707Views0likes7CommentsI enabled external drive backup, but it says 0K has been backed up.
I am trying to backup an external hard drive to the Dropbox Backup and it says it is up to date but when i click on 'View backed up files' it is saying 0KB and nothing is in there?? Any ideas why this is happening?150Views0likes1CommentCan I move the Dropbox installation folder to use the Dropbox Backup feature?
Evidently (according to Dropbox support person) Dropbox can only be installed on a computer's c: drive. I want to install it on my d: drive where all my important files are so I can use Dropbox Backup. The support person said to move all your files to the c: drive to use backup, but obviously this is not possible with "modern" computers that have a smaller SSD drive for programs and store data on other larger internal hard drives. I can't believe that there is no option that allows users to select the location to install Dropbox. Pretty old school/controlling and very limited usefulness.186Views0likes4CommentsDropbox Backup only allows you to backup a few selected folders, why can't I choose another folder?
Dropbox Backup allows backing up only few selected folders, like Desktop, Downloads, Documents, etc. I'm interested in backing up my user's AppData, which is also in my user's folder. Why Dropbox Backup wouldn't let me select this folder? Or any other folder of my choosing, for that matter?161Views0likes1CommentDropbox Backup: Untouched large file keeps restarting upload
I have one large old file (200GB) among many small ones in a folder being uploaded to Dropbox Backup. However, the upload appears to be continually restarting, even though no software on the computer should be touching the file for any kind of write. I've left my computer running with updates disabled for three days straight so far so that the file could try to back up. The farthest it has gotten is less than 10 GB. After leaving it go for a while, I can open the Dropbox window again from the notification area icon to check the progress, and it will have restarted the upload over again, showing 199.8 GB remaining and back down to 166 GB out of 366 GB backed up. This file is never going to back up, and I don't know why.Solved1.1KViews0likes10CommentsHow does Dropbox backup differ to the standard syncing?
Hi there, I have implemented Dropbox on my laptop as the folder where I have all my files and folders saved and synchronized in real time. This is what I call the Dropbox memory. Now I learned about Dropbox backups and my question is: What do I need this for? Doesn't it overlap with the "memory" function? When I connected an external hard disk, I was asked if I want to save the files in a Dropbox backup. I clicked YES and now the hard disk files are stored as a backup in the cloud. This is great. So, it doesn't seem to be possible, at least not with a private license, to save the external hard disk files in the same way as I save my laptop hard disk files. So, the backup is a nice alternative. But again: For the files in my laptop hard disk that are saved and synchronized directly under the Dropx box folder, my impression is that a backup doesn't make sense (and even doesn't seem to be possible). Does this more or less make sense? Best Thomas446Views0likes3CommentsDropbox External Drive Backup - Changing Computers
I’ve just found out when you change Laptop / Desktop you can’t continue to use the same external hard drive with Dropbox Backup. This is absolute madness. If you want to continue to use that hard drive with Dropbox Backup you have to re upload the full HD. I have 2TB used on a 4TB external SSD and I’ve just changed to a new MacBook. I’m having to spend three days uploading / backing-up all my data again just to continue to use that same drive with the new device. What a waste of energy, electricity, data and bandwidth. For no reason. My old backup is sitting there in my account with all the same data and I just have to re-upload 2TB of the exact same files for no reason other than Dropbox can’t set up a way to re-link an external hard drive on on a new system. I can’t believe this is the current state of affairs for this service.538Views1like3CommentsProblem with files after migrating Dropbox from old to new Mac (with OS Sonoma)
Hi! I recently bought a new MBA and migrated my dropbox files from my old MBP to this. Unfortunately, I was told that the harddrive cannot accommodate all my files, so I was asked to choose files to download to my new Mac, this despite the HDD of both Macs are of the same size and the newer Mac being an M3 (vs Intel). Now I have two major problems: a) my new mac cannot include the documents file in the backup b) I have to go online to access the rest of the files that I was not able to include in the migration. I assumed that with the migration, I would have a copy of all the Dropbox file listing in my new MBA, even though some of the files were kept online (not being synced). Question is how do I resolve both issues? Right now I am depending only on the MBA’s time machine to keep track of changes in files, and am hampered when trying to access other files in my Dropbox in my new Mac. Thanks in advance!!151Views0likes1Comment
