15 TopicsMAC OSX - Can someone explain the how the Dropbox folder within Finder works?
I really need help here as my brain has never been good with organisation and I'm easily confused by technology. SO... I need to understand how the dropbox folder within finder on my Mac works. Should i MOVE stuff into it or COPY stuff into it? Is it pointless to copy into it cos i'll end with 2x version of the same file on my laptop? Or is it like a virtual folder that doesn't actually live on my laptop? Initially I dragged folders into it and watched with horror as my hard-drive space started disappearing before my eyes. So yeah, i'm confused. So there is the APP the WEBSITE and the folder on my FINDER on the mac. And I'm struggling to understand which to use and why (and how) (I never used to be this way... I'll put it down to ageing, 👴but dropbox should make something easier to use; having been on this forum I can see there are many others like me!!) thanks for any friendly advice! 🙂2.6KViews0likes9CommentsKeep getting an error there's already a Dropbox folder, when moving it to another external drive
I've been following the instructions here: https://help.dropbox.com/installs/move-dropbox-folder But after a number of GB have been transferred, I keep getting this error message, which stops the process: Error moving Dropbox There's already a copy of /Volume/DRIVE/Dropbox/Folder/.DS_Store here The message is the same, and it keeps being a .DS_Store file, but the folder changes each time. I've tried it with Syncing paused and unpaused, but get the same thing. Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is that I used to have a Dropbox folder on this drive (the target), but for a different computer and installation—and obviously I've deleted that folder, emptied trash, and restarted. I appreciate any help!1.4KViews0likes8CommentsMoving to a new drive instructions don't match screen
I'm on a Windows 10 machine, trying to change Dropbox over to the D drive since C is getting full. But none of the tutorials or official instructions match my screen. When I go to the taskbar and click on Dropbox, what I get is completely useless to me, does not contain any of the things the instructions say to look for. I would show you a screenshot of what I get, but this bloody accursed thing doesn't give me that option even though the icon for it is RIGHT THERE.Solved1.4KViews1like9CommentsCan't move the dropbox folder; stuck in user mode (C) (Windows)
Hey guys, I thought I'd give it a shot and ask the community about this since the support just told me things I had already found on the internet that did not work for me. Yesterday I replaced one of my hard drives, the one on which I had installed Dropbox. It was named "G" so it had nothing to do with user preferences. Before I did that I de-installed Dropbox from my computer. So far so good, I then replaced my hard drive, did the usual initialization process and it all worked fine. Then I re-downloaded the Dropbox setup and installed it. But now in advanced settings, there was just mc c-partition available, more precisely my user profile and nothing else even though my user profile has admin rights and is the only profile on my computer. I'm now stuck in my user profile and can't move the Dropbox folder. There is just no option to click on anything else. Super weird. Apologies if the terminology seems a bit off, my computer is set up in German.886Views0likes5CommentsAdd Copy File Name Option
I find myself often choosing Rename, Copy, and Paste when I want to give a new file a similar name to a previous one that already exists in the same folder. Also, sometimes I need to include the file name in an email, so I have to follow the same tedious process. It would be great if Dropbox could please add an option in the Dropbox iPhone app to simply copy the file name, as it would save ALOT of time and should not be too difficult to implement. Thank you for the consideration.758Views0likes3CommentsUnable to download, move, or copy files from web interface
For the past few days I have been experiencing the following: When I try to download any file I get a generic message that says "There was an error downloading your file". When I try to copy a file to a different folder the folder selection dialog just cycles. Same thing with moving. I have tried chrome, firefox, safari, and Arc. I'm on macOS 14.3.1.Solved513Views0likes2CommentsRepeated Dropbox crash while trying to finish large data move (High Sierra)
i have a large dropbox account (<3TB) and am on a mac pro running high sierra and i am trying to sort a large amount of data but i am in the middle of a sync. i ASSUME this means my data is in the dropbox folder on my DESKTOP but not in the cloud? or - well i am not sure how to think about this. anyway i have an error message from a couple of restarts ago (the ONLY TIME i have seen it) and right now any shut down and restart results in a repeated crash. obviously i am very concerned i will lose data so i very much want to be deliberate about this. FOR INSTANCE the reinstall instructions seem to say to delete the application and then delete the DROPBOX folder. i am not sure i am comfortable deleting the dropbox folder. i also have the advanced uninstall document but this seems to be a little more technically advanced than i am comfortable with (i think it involves terminal commands). also i don't know how and i don't even know if i can figure out how to LOCATE my dropbox folder or where/how it is being synced? can you help? Hello, I found two concerning issues with OneDrive and I'm looking for a product that doesn't have them. A user accidentally moved a folder from OneDrive to local PC storage and then purged the local PC folder. Because the folder was moved from OneDrive folder (instead of being deleted), it simply vanished from the cloud, backups, and did not appear in the recycling bin. Luckily, the user also had a laptop, so we restored the folder from there, but it gave everyone a heart attack. Does moving a folder (as opposed to deleting it) vanish it from Dropbox and the backups? Then, we put the folder where it was supposed to be and resynced it. The sync was running all day (600gb worth of data). Everything was going fine until we hit 500gb, when sync stopped and OneDrive announced that "you may be experiencing a temporary sync delay due to hight activity." Are there any caps due to high activity in Dropbox? Thank you.267Views0likes1Comment
