I've left comments for some students, but they can't see them after sharing the files.
I have made comments on some students' papers. They are visible on my end.
They are also visible on my professors' end.

Allow me to clarify first, how are you sharing those files back with the students? Are you sharing them with their email address/Dropbox account or via shared links?
