Hey gkmach1ne, thanks for your post.
If you'd like to wipe your computer, but keep your Dropbox and backup files safe, you'll basically need to disconnect the computer from your Dropbox account.
Your backup files should currently be accessible from your backups page online and they should remain there, even if the computer is disconnected.
Now, to disconnect the computer, you'll need to either sign out of the Dropbox application or delete the computer from your connected devices at the bottom of the page here.
Once the computer is disconnected, you should be able to safely wipe the computer and all Dropbox and backup files should be accessible from your account online.
