I don't know why this works, but it does.
The solution to pinning an Excel file that is stored in Dropbox to the Excel app pinned on the Taskbar is:
- Open Excel file in Dropbox and save to the Desktop with a slightly different filename (i.e., add a 1)
- Open and close the new file in the Desktop and check to see if it appears in the Recent list by right-clicking the Excel app pinned to the Taskbar.
- Rename the new file to the original filename (i.e,, remove the 1)
- Move the new file with the original name from the Desktop back to it's proper Dropbox location. You'll be asked if you want to replace the file that is currently there, so click Yes.
- Open and close the file in Dropbox. The file should show up in the Recent list on the Excel app pinned to the Taskbar.
- Pin the file from the Recent list to the Excel app that is pinned to the Taskbar.
