How do I leave a shared Dropbox folder?
My friend invited me to share a 3gb folder she had. I accepted. Now I want to leave the folder and cant. I followed the advice from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZoTpNkvPCI
The problem is that...
- 6 years agoHey Padidto5,To remove yourself from the shared folder while you’re a member, try doing so from the website:
- Sign in to the website.
- Click Files.
- Navigate to the shared folder you want to permanently remove from your Dropbox account.
- Select the Share button that should appear next to the folder when you hover over it.
- Find your name under the list of emails.
- Click on the Can view/Can edit that’s next to your name.
- Select Remove my access.
If you’re not seeing this option or you’re still having trouble with this, let me know.

Yes and no. My real issue is that I need to delete this 3gb folder as it is eating up all my space. When I have tried to delete folders in the past a series of odd things have happened:
If I am not the folder owner (lie in this case) then dropbox will delete the folder but the space usage remains. If I try to permanently delete the folder from my trash then dropbox says I dont have permission to delete the files (out of my own trash bin!). I have about 1gb currently of trash I cant permanently delete because the folder owner is someone else.
So this time I wanted to remove myself first.

The only options under the Share button are:
- Invite via email
- Add to Trello
There are 13 members on this folder and I'd really prefer not to contact the owner of the folder if possible. Thanks.

Hi there,
I am having a similar issue. There is a folder shared with me that I want to remove from my Dropbox, but I don't see the option to remove myself.
When I select "Share" and then "Who can access" on this folder to find my email on the list, there is no option to remove myself. It only says I can edit, but there's no further option. Any help is appreciated!

Hi lindsaylindsay, thanks for posting here!
Just to clarify, do you wish to temporarily remove this shared folder from your Dropbox account (with the option to add it back some time in the future) or permanently?

HELP PLEASE:
I had 3 devices listed as linked to my Dropbox Business Account, I actually only had 2
- My Laptop
- My Cell phone
- My cell phone was listed again?
I was suddenly unable to connect to Dropbox via my cell phone and received this.
I am unable to connect to Dropbox because I'm not connected to the Internet and to try again later
This all the while I was in fact connected to the net and connected via high-speed internet on my router.
I have a voice recorder on my cell and had 800 recordings, suddenly when
I did re-connect they were gone and so was the file on Dropbox was empty..
Both cell phones had the exact same name but the stated last login on one of them was not me.
I removed links to both cell phones and left my laptop linked and changed passwords everywhere
I looked closer at my Dropbox setup
I had 2 large Dropbox folders, like 65GIG, I was somehow listed as the shared person. I removed myself via the Dropbox website and then all files deleted and then redownloaded themselves and appear fine, WHY?, it was scary and I felt that maybe someone was linked in the background thru my cell phone which is why my access was down for 2-days
THEN after all the adjustments and password changes I thought maybe i am ok....THEN..Sunday, June 14th @ 2pm I received a text that flashed on my cell screen on the bottom of my screen, it quoted verbatim a line from one of the missing recordings, when I clicked on it, the thing disappeared. It was not in logs, it was NO-WHERE...
Any help here is soooo appreciated.....
thanks

Hello afocusedforce, thanks for reaching out to us and sorry to hear about this.
In order to have a better look into the matter, I'd recommend continuing via email due to account-specific info that'll be needed.
As such, I was able to locate the ongoing investigation that you have with a member of my team and have passed your comments along to them.
I can also see that they replied to you, so when you get the chance, please check your inbox for their latest message. Thanks!

Did you find a solution to this? I have the same problem you had: I deleted a folder that I didn't realize was share - it said I wasn't the folder owner (lie), and now I can't even see the folder to remove myself. I shared this folder with a former client that I don't have contact with anymore, so I can't ask to have the folder shared with me - this contact left the company and their email address doesn't exist anymore.
Did you find a solution? Or is there anyone who knows what I can do?- Hannah2 years agoDropbox Staff
Hey regan_traphagen and hilje, sorry to see you're having trouble with this process.
Have you tried removing your access to the folder using these steps on dropbox.com?
I can see you mentioned that you used an iPad, hilje, are you able to do this from a computer?

Hi,
Thx. It worked. A bit different than the advices in the dropbox help pagina you referred to, probably because of the IPad.
I found the option of deleting the map just and only for myself in “mapinstellingen” ( dutch) an option which was showed after taken the first step in the link you shared.
So thank you. Finally solved!

Hi,
It is a difficult problem to deal with.
No I haven’t found the solution yet. There were some good tips but they didn’t solve the problem.
The fact is that you cannot remove yourself from a shared folder in case the owner gave you the permission to edit. And if you once opened that folder in your dropbox account, you cannot delete it without causing trouble for the other folder members: the folder will be deleted from dropbox for everyone with whom the folder is shared!
I didn’t found out yet if it will be deleted for the owner too.
Although the owner can put the folder in dropbox again its a problem you do not want.
In the mean time my free account is full and I cannot use dropbox anymore for which I need it.
In the end I started distrusting dropbox. To me it seems they do everything to let you choose for a paid account which really is not cheap.
I hope someone else can help you!
