When will online-only files work on Linux?
I need to save space on my hard drive. Online-only files would be the perfect solution, but it still does not work on linux fedora.
When will we have this solution?

At the moment, Smart Sync is only available on Windows and Mac. Dropbox has made no announcement on its availability on Linux. They usually don't discuss timelines or upcoming features until they're reaady to announce them, so we likely won't know that it's coming until it's already here, assuming that it's coming at all.

Hi Dropbox, im after a clear answer here and hoping you can help not just me, but everyone who comes to this thread.
Will Dropbox ever support the online-only mode!!?? I can not for the life of me understand how this has not been implemented over the years, especially when we are paying for large storage plans, theres just no way we can fully sync to our systems, its a massive oversight.
Can we please have this brought to the front of your attention Dropbox? Can you please at least bring it up in a meeting?

Hi FlashyX ,
Thanks for bringing this up.
We understand how frustrating this must be, and we have passed on your feedback to the team. However, we don't have any further information on this at the current time.
If there's anything else you need or want to talk about please don't hesitate to reach out.

Come on Dropbox! what on earth are you thinking leaving online mode out of the Linux version!!??? Seriously, like, what are you doing? Put in into your agenda for Mondays meeting right now!

Buongiorno,
Cordiali saluti

I find it quite amazing that a feature like Smart-Sync has not made it to Linux, while it has been in the other Dropbox clients literally for years.
I'd really hate to have to move to another solution just because the high-ups at Dropbox deem their Linux user base too insignificant to warrant porting Smart-Sync over to the Linux client.

Has anyone tried to run Dropbox via Docker? Smart Sync works via Docker?
Other toughts:
Sync.com says a Linux version is on their plans. They have a similar Smart Sync... - GTATechHelpful | Level 6
6 years and still no SmartSync for linux users!

Dear All, I am using Dropbox in Windows, Mac, and have just installed it in Linux (Pop!OS).
I am trying to find the option of having "all files as online only", but cannot find it.. has anyone got any experience in it? I wonder whether there are different versions of Dropbox installation downloaded from the Linux repository stores -and whether I've somehow got a version that doesn't offer such an option (despite oferring it to Windows & Mac)..
Any help is much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Christos

Hi Christos K., I hope you're doing well, and thanks for posting here!
At the moment, the ability to make your files only is only available on Windows and Mac devices, but not on Linux.
I hope this clarifies!
- Christos K.Explorer | Level 4Hi Megan, thank you for the answer. Is there any visibility (or any way I can get notified) on when we may see this function (set up at Preferences all files as “online only”) coming also into Linux? Very grateful. Kind regards, Christos.

I have been using Dropbox for almost 10 years now I think. I've always used it with Windows though, and the smart sync feature was basically essential for me, I store huge amount of source file for graphical stuff. I had to switch Linux recently and I can't believe a killer feature like this isn't available here. Looking at how this issue remains unsolved from 2018 it's crazy, and I think I'll be moving to some cheaper cloud storage as basically I see no reason to pay more for Dropbox in this case.

I dont think this feature will EVER be implemented
I am in the process of switching over to NextCloud and self-hosting
Much more chance of getting smart-sync integrated as its Open-Source and will save me a ton on monthly hosting fees
Whats the point in paying these types of fees if they cant be bothered to implement requested features after 7 years!

Lethargy keeps me on board. I just cant be rc'd with researching other clouds. NextCloud why, how much effort to transition?

Yes, bizarre isn't it.

Hi everybody,
I just setup a Linux workstation and im surprised that the "online only" feature is missing, since it is definitely a keyfeature for Linux laptops.
Would appreciate to get this feature since, this is kind of a must-have for me.

Have also been waiting for this feature for a while. I guess the good people at Dropbox can't be bothered to communicate about it, however.

'Smart' is usually an oxymoron. Dropbox is losing its raison d'etre if it is no-longer a universal solution- simply it is now broken.

Adding one more voice for this feature for Linux. Sitting here watching my HD run out of space. 🙄

Pretty please: support Linux at parity with other platforms. I know it's a pain and expensive for such small market segment but it's the right thing to do!

This thread is marked "Solved" but it's not -
SmartSync is NOT available on Linux, despite me being a paying customer, and hundreds of posts here over years asking when it will be available.
The thread is NOT solved.
When will SmartSync be available? Is it in the works?
How about a partial refund for features not available?

I also need smart sync for linux! Can you please implement it?
