The symbol means it is online only. You need to download it (usually trying to Open it will do that, but if its large right click on it and select 'Make available offline')
And no searching is a restriction and known issue with the new Mac setup 😞
Unfortunately its not possible to go back

I figured out how to make word open the files after funky sync; you go to "open file", (mac os), then in the window at the right bottom there is a dropdown menu, one of the options is "repair". That worked. FOR ALL DROPBOX PEOPLE, THIS MEANS THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE FILES!!
I WISH THEY WOULD FIX IT IS SUCH A TIME WASTER!

My previous post-open file in Word, not system.

Hey Cathy Mendelsohn, thanks for posting your feedback on our Community.
Regarding searching for your Dropbox files through Finder, are you using Spotlight?
If so, after opening Finder, you might need to wait a little while and then try again, to see if it works.
If not, you might need to actually rebuild your spotlight index.
Also, you can take a look at this article with some more info on the expected changes on the new Dropbox for mac OS app.
If you're experiencing any issues that are not included in this list, please let us know and we'll happily investigate for you.

Assuming this is attempting to repair the files, then all that likely did was trigger a download of the files from Dropbox.
In order for your OS to repair a file, it needs access to the file. The first thing that would happen if you tried to repair an Online-only file is that Dropbox would attempt to download the file so the OS can access it. The repair process likely didn't fix anything. It just triggered the download which made the files available again, the same way marking them as Available Offline does.
