Hi Ekeating, just jumping in here. I have saved WhatsApp chats to my Dropbox successfully in the past 😎. Here are the steps how:
To export your chats from WhatsApp on iOS:
- Open the chat you wish to export.
- Tap the name of the chat or contact at the top.
- Scroll down to the bottom (to the last green option) and tap Export Chat.
- Choose Attach Media or Without Media based on your preference.
- Wait for the chat to process and export (this may take some time).
- When prompted, select Dropbox as the option to save the exported chat.
To export your chat history from a chat on Android:
- Open the chat you wish to export.
- Tap the three dots.
- Select More
- Tap Export Chat
- Choose Without media or Include media, depending on your preference.
- When prompted, select Dropbox as the option to save the exported chat.
I hope these steps work for you so you can keep your chats safe in your Dropbox account.

Hello T_theresa_A, I read your response and was able to create a manual backup through your instructions. But what you've written seems to be quite different from the steps that I had to go through.
Also, you must've forgotten to mention that this method will only save one chat at a time and not all of your WhatsApp chats.
- In the main screen of WhatsApp, click on the three dots menu button in the top right.
- Click on settings, which is the last option in the menu.
- In the settings page, click on Chats. (usually the fifth option)
- Then scroll down to see the option "Chat History".
- Here, click on Export Chat. (Usually the first option)
- Then it'll ask you to select a chat. (Unfortunately, you can only select one at a time)
- You will be asked if you want to save any media files in the chat or just the messages, choose as you wish to.
- Then you will see the share options, from which you may select Dropbox or any other storage option.
Only the chat that you selected would be stored and none other. So, basically if you want to save all of your chats, you really have to dig deep into finding workarounds on how to get the chat backup file for all of your WhatsApp chats.

Hi broveer , welcome to the Dropbox Community. Thank you so much for your helpful steps here.
You're correct, the steps I gave previously seem to now be out of date. You used to be able to select the chats you wished to export and could do multiple at a time. Now, it seems you can only select one chat at a time with WhatsApp's current process.
I’ll update the steps in my previous comment to reflect this change.
Thanks again for your contribution, it's people like you who keep this Community so vibrant and collaborative.
