Folders Appearing and Filling with Empty Folders Every Few Minutes on Mac OS

Dropbox has begun placing folders within folders in my Documents Folder.  I'm on a new MacBook Pro running the newest operating system, and this just started up yesterday.  Odd thing is I haven't use...

I spent two hours on a chat with Apple. It ended with me disconnecting chat to reboot Mac Mini is "safe mode." I was just about to type that fixed the problem when right before my eyes another folder appeared . . . time for a new chat . . . .

    I have a call back scheduled with Apple after three chats. The last thing they wrote was this:
    Generally speaking, if you use or have any type of 3rd party cloud related software or services installed on your Mac, they may cache using temporary folders to upload content from your Mac. That may be normal or expected depending on the service you use, but we can confirm that Apple would absolutely NOT be creating random Dropbox associated folders on your Mac as that's a 3rd party service, and there are no Dropbox related features, folders, or software native to Mac OS.

    We can recommend uninstalling any dropbox related software, extensions or add ons you may have installed as that may end up easily resolving this. Until those are removed however, this behavior may continue.

        Well, I spent the better part of today dealing with this issue . . . spoke with five members of Apple Support. I've been advised to create a Time Machine backup and then do a reformat and clean install of Sonoma. Apple is calling me tomorrow at 2pm Pacific Time to guide me through reinstalling my stuff from Time Machine, little by little to avoid reinfecting OSX . . . assuming the clean install is not buggy and populating empty folders in Documents. I'll gladly report back. Wish I had better news and an easy fix. Looks like my Mac Mini needs to be wiped. ;-0
