Can’t open a .docx file on the iPad from the Dropbox mobile app

When using my iPad, I used to be able to access Microsoft .doc.x files in my Dropbox folder and choose to open it in Word. Now when I try to do so,  I get a message that says, that it can’t open the file because it is “stored in an unsupported server location.”

Can I get some help please?

  • I figured it out. I was a matter of adding Dropbox as a Storage Account to Word in the Word App. Somehow that connection was lost. Thanks for your help and your time. It's working now.

Hi Pbamasa, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

What app is opening when attempting to open the Word file from the Dropbox mobile app?

Is it the Word app, or another app? What version of iOS, the Dropbox mobile app, and the Word app are you running on your device?

This will help me to assist further!

Hi Jay. Thanks for your prompt response.

When access the file in Dropbox and click on the "Open in" and choose Microsoft Word, it shows "OneDrive" in the background, and a dialogue box opens that says, "Can't open file - sorry, [filename.docx] is stored in an unsupported server location."

      9th generation iPad. OS version18.1.1 (22B91)

      Dropbox App version 406.2.2

      Microsoft version 2.92.24122016

I hope this information is helpful

It sounds like the device is trying to open OneDrive instead of the Word app.

You might need to change this setting in the Word or OneDrive app to ensure that Dropbox opens the Word app to edit the file.

I'm not sure what changed. The OneDrive app always showed for a fraction of a second then it would redirect to Word.

Thanks for the info. Could you try uninstalling the Word app and reinstalling it to see if this helps?

I have done so, but I'm still getting the issue.
