Dropbox and Boxcryptor - can't access my Thesis files anymore.
Dear Community,
I have a serious problem and hope somebody can help me:
I am working since month on my diploma thesis, all files for that stored under Dropbox in a directory encrypted with boxcryptor classic, which I made visible as drive "K". Since two days I cannot open any of my files anymore. Word, Excel etc. all tell me, that the documents cannot be read and maybe corrupted. If I try to use Windows explorer to copy one of these files from the boxcryptor drive "K" to any local directory, explorer tells me that he source file or the source drive could not be opened - but it is full visible in explorer and Boxcrypter opens up the encrypypted directory with my password w/o any complains.
I have not changed anything in my installation. How can I get access to my files again?
I am using boxcryptor classic v 1.3.2 and dropbox client v213.4.4597.
I really need your help!
Thanks
Kathleen

If I make it then "offline available" I get still the same problem

I have to correct my statements: With the editor I can open them both ways offline and online. But with the correct application (Word, PDF etc.) I always get the message above - guess because the appllication cannot open it because the file content is encrypted and therefore not readable for the application...

If I start boxcryptor then, it does not let me open the file even with Windoes editor anymore... (device is not working error message - see above)

Hi Megan
any idea what I can still do / try to get access again ?I checked Windows updates but no updates at or since the problem has occured. I also checked my Dropbox folder, but latest change was my thesis version "K:\Studium\Thesis\2401207Projektskizze" I saved on Dec 7th - 5 days ago. I also see the boxcryptor key file (?) ".encfs6" in my Dropbox boxcyptor folder.
I looked at https://www.boxcryptor.com/migration-guide but I think this is related to the newer versoion of boxcryptor, which seems not to be compatible with my used old "boxcryptor classic" version, correct?
Any way I can retrieve my files with that ".encfs6" file? I just need to get read access once and then would copy them into a non encrypted folder to be safe...
Plesase help - I cannot continue to work on my thesis for now due to that reason...
Thanks

BTW: here is the error message I get when trying to open the file in the boxcryptor dive with the Windos editor (now in English):

If I open the encrypted file in the dropbox folder with Windoes editor (online or offline) I can still open it and get these non readable characters...
Seems to me that boxcryptor for whatever reasons is preventing access...
I therefore have also tried another PC with another boxcryptor installation (also version 1.3.2.0) but I get same results - no access ...

Hi Hannah
have been away yesterday, sorry for the late answer.
I am using a Laptop with Win 11, newest dropbox client v213.4.4597 and boxcryptor 1.3.2.0.
My boyfriend (PC guy :-) took a look yesterday: The .encfs6 file in the boxcryptor directory within dropbox has a line "generated with boxcryptor 1.5.413.155". Thus, he installed boxcryptor 1.5.406.139 as portable app and that way at least could get access to my files. But when he removed boxcryptor 1.3.2.0 and reinstalled 1.5.406.139 as global (not portable) we got the same problem that if we mount the boxcryptor folder withing dropbox with boxcryptor as drive K: we get no access to the files. It only works if boxcryptor is used as portable version...
Looks like a problem between dropbox, boxcryptor and Windows file system/manmagement...?
