Recovery of Password in Password Protection

I can not recall the password for our password protected files.  Admittedly, I have not had to visit this business for a number of years, and have reason to do so now.  I had my account name and pass...

    There is no way to recover via Dropbox I'm afraid (unless you'd uploaded a previous none password protected file in last 30 days/free user or 180 paid).

Is this the password to the actual file itself (i.e. if you download it and open in, say, Word, you need to input a password) or a one for a shared link?

Yes, this is the password one must enter when the document is downloaded into Word or Excel.
