Incorrect dropbox space usage on windows
Hi Guys,
My local Windows Dropbox is fully synced with my online Dropbox. Windows Explorer file/properties shows my Dropbox folder is 576 MB but to my surprise, dropbox.com and dropbox app both say my dropbox is full. I have checked the plan tab and found my regular file size is 3.4 GB which is not correct. My shared folder only takes less than 100 MB. What is going on here? Why the discrepancy? Any inputs?
Thanks,
Tao
We can confirm that the most recent releases of Dropbox should have resolved this issue. Users affected by this issue were unable to see all of the backups on their account. This meant that when they believe they deleted some or all of their files, there could still be backups taking up space on their account. This should no longer be affecting users who should be able to see all of their backups.
You can find out deleted information on disabling and deleting backups below:
If you disable the backup and choose to "Leave content in Dropbox", your backup content would still be there until it was permanently deleted.
When you go to the Backups page and see no content, be sure to check the deleted section, too.
You can download the files from this location if you need to store them locally on your device.
To clear out the data from the deleted backup, follow these steps:- Navigate to
dropbox.com/backup/all
- Click on
Show deleted backups
- Select their backup and click on
permanently delete
Some users did not have backups, but they were members of shared folders which were taking up space on their accounts. You can remove shared folders using these instructions.
If you are still experiencing quota issues after following these steps, then confirm that we can reach out to you via email and our support agents will look into this with you.- Navigate to

Thank you for your kind reply and your good intentions, but I wasn't able to follow the instructions. I just deleted some files and the problem is solved.
Thanks, anyway!

Hi. I have a basic free account with 2GB space. My computer shows I am using 199KB - there are no files in it and no shared files. How can I get back to being able to using some space?

Hi, For the past year I've been dealing with being over my limit. I no longer use dropbox for anything because I always get an over storage message.
I have deleted absolutely everything that I could find in my account.
There are no shared files ether.
According to dropbox all my storage is taken up with regular files.
Yet, it wont show me a single file when I open up my account.
How do i fix this or should i just delete dropbox completely and walk away?
Thanks for any suggestions

Can you provide a screenshot of your Plan page? Be sure to mask any private information. Also, have you checked your Backups page?

Hi There!
My question is why does dropbox say i am out of storage space when
we only use 805MB?
I have tried everything: signed out, signed back, cleaned all our storage, restarted dropbox etc..
I don't think there is anything else i haven't tried what i am aware of.
I would really apprechiate some help here 🙂
Thank you in advance!
Peter

Hi Peter,
Are you a member of any shared folders? Do you have any backups saved?
Both of these can consume storage space in your Dropbox account.

Hi!
Thanks for your reply! I don't think that i am a member of any shared folder. Also i tried to check if i have backup files bc since i wrote my question i read that could be the problem but i just can not find the way to check them. I read instructions online but it doesn't give me those options

Hello everyone, a few days ago I suddenly received a message saying that the data volume of 2.45 GB used on my current plan of 2.5 GB was almost exhausted and that I should buy additional storage space. However, the actual amount of data in the Dropbox on my Windows PC is only 381 MB in 129 files. I also don't see any additional data in the Dropbox web client that could explain this discrepancy. Moreover, I have not added any data recently that could have changed the status at all. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Thanks in advance. Best regards Stephan

How did this happen, I used a new SSD disk, but did not tell this Samsung disk to back up data to Dropbox? Thank you for this hint. Best regards Stephan

I had more than 1/2 a gig of storage left for a long time. I haven't taken more than a dozen pictures in the past few months and have not done anything else to take any space. now suddenly just over 500 MB disappeared.... just enough to take me slightly over the limit and now I am being bombarded with ads for this ridiculous $100+ upgrade package...(which is the minimum and completely unaffordable to most of us). I don't want to waste hours trying to find how they inflated my storage usage but i suspect a few MB was somehow tagged onto my existing photos and I don't know how to prove it. I am CERTIAN I haven't uploaded that much and defiantly not overnight, I had just checked the day before how much was left. so its not just a coincidence.
PS- the only help I can get from drobox is a sales pitch to rent more space

They didn't inflate your storage. Dropbox doesn't do that. If you're using an extra 500MB of space that you weren't using yesterday, then something was added to your account to take up that space. A shared folder, the backup feature, etc., something has used the space.
If you haven't added anything to the account yourself, make sure you don't have any backups taking up the space. Check your Backups page.

Hello. My free Dropbox storage 2 G was full. I got messages saying that my Dropbox storage is all used up and my files aren't syncing. They offered to improve my account. But I want to stay the Dropbox Basic (2 G). So I emptied my folder. But my new files are not synchronized because the backup storage is full. How to free up backup storage? How to update my Dropbox Basic account? I only see the message that my storage is full and the offer to upgrade my account to Dropbox Plus. But I can’t restore my Dropbox Basic. Can anyone help?

Hey vicsver13, thanks for reaching out to the Dropbox Community.
If your account is full due to backup files, you can see and delete them here.
And if you need some additional space, take a look at this article for more info.

Hi - I am on the Free Account with 2G of storage space. I am using 145M per the screenshot below. However, my account is no longer syncing because Dropbox shows my space is full. Primary culprit is "backup" per the 2nd screenshot. How can I find and delete the backup files? I appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks in advance
