Cannot update to Dropbox for macOS Sonoma on File Provider

Hello. I'm on a mac (Sonoma 14.1.2).

After recently reinstalling dropbox following the advanced reinstall instructions I am unable to (re)update to File Provider. I get the following p[ersistent message:

"We can't move your Dropbox folder right now. Something went wrong on our end..."

I previously had updated to File Provider, so my dropbox folder is already located at:

/Users/[name]/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox

but I think the dropbox app believes it's in my home directory, i.e. where the symlink is.

Dropbox appears, with its icon, under favourites in the Finder sidebar; it does not appear under "locations"

In the dropbox app I have the option to update to File Provider (under preferences → sync). But when I choose that it aborts after a few seconds, with the error message given above.

Many thanks

  • Thanks. I think I've fixed the problem. I'd overlooked the note accompanying the "advanced reinstall" instructions: "If you’re using Dropbox for macOS on File Provider, you won’t be able to run an advanced reinstall following the steps below." I uninstalled dropbox again and this time moved and renamed the local dropbox folder as a backup. I then reinstalled, and downloaded a fresh copy of all files from dropbox. Now the update to File Provider has worked.

Hi op2, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Have you tried quitting all the open apps when attempting to reinstall the Dropbox desktop application?

This will help me to assist further!

@op2 I had what I think is the same problem after I migrated from an Intel Mac to a Silicon Mac using Migration Assistant.

I tried op2's solution and it looked like it would work at first. At least, I was again presented with the option to attempt the upgrade. Unfortunately, it only resulted in yet another data-hogging resync of all files.

I finally got the answer from the Dropbox support team today that works. (I think the link with the build number may change over time.) They did apologize and noted, "Please know that we just found out this workaround as we were working on our end to test out and find solutions."

        Please follow these steps:
        1. Log in to dropbox.com using your web browser.
        2. Click on your account picture or avatar at the top right corner of the page.
        3. Click Settings.
        4. From the General tab, scroll down to the Preferences section and check the box next to Early Access if it is unchecked.

Then, use the following link to install the latest version of the Dropbox Desktop application:
        https://www.dropbox.com/downloading?build=191.3.4892&plat=mac&type=autosignin

After doing so, you should then be able to successfully update to File Provider.
