Dropbox has unexpectedly quit -- how to solve this error?

Hello Dropbox community,

I had some issues with Dropbox, asked here and Walter (many thanks!) gave me a link to download the app again. All working fine.

But now I keep getting messages that Dropbox has unexpectedly quit. I click the restart button on the message to restart Dropbox but it does not start.

I've never had any issue with Dropbox before but now it seems to be going wrong.

Is there an easy fix to this? Or something I have done wrong maybe?

Hoping someone can help.

Many thanks!

  • Hi Megan,

I have uninstalled and uploaded the Dropbox app again. It seems to be working now.

But if the issue starts again, I will try your suggestion of an advanced install.

Hopefully, it will all work well this time.

Thanks for your help! Much appreciated..

    Hi HerbalTea,

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Restart Your Computer:
    2. Check for Windows Updates:
      • Make sure your Windows 11 is up to date. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.
    3. Update Dropbox:
      • Download the most recent version from the Dropbox website.
    4. Reinstall Dropbox:
      • Uninstall Dropbox completely:
        • Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features and find Dropbox. Click on it and select Uninstall.
      • After uninstalling, restart your computer.
      • Reinstall Dropbox by downloading the latest version from the website.
    5. Check for Conflicting Software:
      • Sometimes, other applications can interfere with Dropbox. Check if any recently installed software might be causing conflicts, particularly security or backup software.
    6. Run Dropbox as Administrator:
      • Right-click on the Dropbox icon and select Run as administrator. This can sometimes help with permissions-related issues.
    7. Check Event Viewer:
      • If the issue persists, you can check the Windows Event Viewer for any error messages related to Dropbox. This might give you more insight into what’s going wrong.

If none of these steps work, you may want to reach out to Dropbox Support for more specific assistance.

Hey HerbalTea, let's jump right into this!

Would you mind clarifying your OS, along with the Dropbox version that you're using on your end?

If you happen to have a screenshot of the error, that'd be most helpful.

Let me know more, and we'll take it from there!

      Hi Megan,

I am using Windows 11. I am using the free version of Dropbox. It's the most recent version I imagine as I had to restart the app the other day.

I don't have an image of the message now. It says: Dropbox has unexpectedly quit.

Everything was working fine until this week. Never had issues before.

Hey HerbalTea, thanks for the heads up!

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with our desktop app on your computer. Have you already tried performing an advanced reinstall?

If the issue persists, you can try creating a new OS profile and installing the app there as a test.
