My files disappeared after logging in to Dropbox with Gmail.

Although Google treats googlemail and gmail as the same email address, they are, in fact, different email addresses to any other service you use them on.
If you previously had an account using a googlemail address and them signed in with a gmail address, you have signed in to a separate account. Sign out and then sign back in with your googlemail address.
