Thanks for replying.
So, the owner has given me full access to their Dropbox folder and hence to the files.
I have full access to the shared file. I could edit it, its just they don't see the updated data at their end.

Hey wing1307.
By full access, do you mean edit access?
If you navigate to the folder on dropbox.com, click on the 'share' icon on the right and then on 'who can access', does this person appear as the owner of the folder?

Under "who can access" yes they appear as owner and I have rights to Edit.
In fact it says anyone with this link can Edit.

Hi wing1307, just for clarification, a shared link with edit access means it will be added to your account as a shared folder. Is this what you're seeing on your end?
Does the other user see the file in a shared folder?

Yes, I see the file in my folder and the owner too.
The only concern is, I made some changes to this shared file but they didn't reflect to the owner when they accessed it at their end.
