Incorrect dropbox space usage on windows
Hi Guys,
My local Windows Dropbox is fully synced with my online Dropbox. Windows Explorer file/properties shows my Dropbox folder is 576 MB but to my surprise, dropbox.com and dropbox app both say my dropbox is full. I have checked the plan tab and found my regular file size is 3.4 GB which is not correct. My shared folder only takes less than 100 MB. What is going on here? Why the discrepancy? Any inputs?
Thanks,
Tao
We can confirm that the most recent releases of Dropbox should have resolved this issue. Users affected by this issue were unable to see all of the backups on their account. This meant that when they believe they deleted some or all of their files, there could still be backups taking up space on their account. This should no longer be affecting users who should be able to see all of their backups.
You can find out deleted information on disabling and deleting backups below:
If you disable the backup and choose to "Leave content in Dropbox", your backup content would still be there until it was permanently deleted.
When you go to the Backups page and see no content, be sure to check the deleted section, too.
You can download the files from this location if you need to store them locally on your device.
To clear out the data from the deleted backup, follow these steps:- Navigate to
dropbox.com/backup/all
- Click on
Show deleted backups
- Select their backup and click on
permanently delete
Some users did not have backups, but they were members of shared folders which were taking up space on their accounts. You can remove shared folders using these instructions.
If you are still experiencing quota issues after following these steps, then confirm that we can reach out to you via email and our support agents will look into this with you.- Navigate to

I recently purchased a new computer and used Dropbox to transfer my files from the old computer to the new computer. I did a temporary plan upgrade so I could move the large number of files. Once everything was moved, I downgraded back to the basic free plan. The only things still in my Dropbox are the files that were already there before all of this process began. However, it is saying that I am using 474 GB of storage, so it is locked down and won't sync anymore. The large transfer folders I used for the move are deleted. The deleted files folder is empty. All backups have been deleted, but when I go to my Manage Account page it is still showing that there is 472.2GB being used in Backups, as well as my original 2.6GB used in Regular Files . I don't know what else to do to get things back like they were before this process began, and I have important files that I need to be able to sync.
Also, it says I only have 2GB of storage space in my account now, but I had more than that before doing this trial. How can I get this fixed and get my account back to how it was a month ago???

You're certain there are no backups showing on the Backup page?

Yes, it said "there are no files here." I looked again and there was a button that said something like hide folders with issues. I clicked on that and all the backups that I had deleted were in there and I had to tell it to delete them again. Why would my command to delete make it just hide them? So frustrating. Thank you for suggesting I look again.
- fdawsonNew member | Level 2I have the free 2GB Dropbox. I have 1 file that is only 84kb. So why does drop box keep saying that my Dropbox is full? Is there a cache that needs clearing that I’m not seeing? I’ve checked my deleted files and it’s empty as well, so I don’t understand what else it could be.

Dropbox backup? www.dropbox.com/backups
- FullenloveExplorer | Level 3I’ve been a basic member for over 10 years with one MS Excel file and a few jpeg images. Over the years I was provided free extra storage for different tasks. Satisfied with my needs for DropBox and the accumulated free storage over the years, my Mac recently crashed and when I was finally able to reload everything there was a window that popped up that wanted me to upgrade DropBox to a paid 2TB storage. Apparently, I accidentally chose this option and then realized I had automatically charges. When I was able to reach someone at DropBox to remove this paid storage service, suddenly I’ve been bombarded with “account is full”. This isn’t possible I thought since I’ve never had issues for the items I store on DropBox. Now in my attempt to reach someone, I find this is my only avenue and I’m unable to call them. Please help me retain the previous free storage I had only a month ago and or a way to talk with a real person about this issue. Thank you, Ron F.

Hey Fullenlove, thanks for reaching out to our Community.
Let's get right to it!
Can you please take a look at your plan page and let me know how much space it says you're using?
Is it possible that after you restored everything in your Mac, you chose to enable our backup feature on the Dropbox application?
- FullenloveExplorer | Level 3Hanna,
Thank you for responding.
My account says it is full at 4.38 GB.
I know I had much more than that just a couple months ago.
I even deleted many JPEG images in an attempt to gain more space.
I wonder how I can resolve this issue.
Thank you,
Ron F.

I have the box message that it is full. I have deleted all the items, deleted shared files and turned off the backup of external drive. Box indicates still full. Why, what next?

You've turned off the backup, but are the files still in your account? Check your Backup page. Also, check your Plan page to see the breakdown of your usage.

Thank you, that worked.

No files are listed on the website or other locations. Consistently being prompted to upgrade my storage limit however nothing is there. Checked to see if files needed to be permenately deleted from my deleted files selection and it is also empty. Can not find the location of these suspected 5GBs of data that is in my storage since everything shows to be empty. Requesting support on how I could empty the account and start to use the account again. I can select manage account and see that I have a 5.3 backup but cannot find it to remove it. This seems to be my only hint to the issue however I cannot find this backup.

What's the breakdown of your usage on your Account page? Regular files, Shared files, Backups, etc.?

Ah.. There is 1.8Gb in the Backups, but how do I get rid of them please?

dropbox reports that the limit has been exceeded due to backups. But it doesn’t show the backups themselves anywhere and doesn’t allow them to be deleted. How to delete unnecessary backups?

I gave up my premium subscription of Dropbox a few years ago, but still use the free service for some personal things. I have the standard 2GB of space, plus 0.75GB of bonus space.
I’m suffering from what seems to be a common problem on Dropbox, which is that it’s reporting being out of space when it shouldn’t. I’m fully aware that space is used up for many reasons, but I’ve systematically gone through everything. I have no shared folders, no backup folder settings nor deleted files pending permanent deletion. I’ve also reduced my Dropbox use to a single computer.
In the web-based interface to Dropbox, User>Manage Accounts shows that I have 34.2MB of standard files, 2.7GB of backup files. So, while I have no backup folders set, I clearly have something attributed to backup which is using up nearly all my quota. I don’t see anywhere in the web or desktop interface to identify what this backup is, or provide the ability delete it.
Any advice appreciated.

I am backing up 2GB of files. Have never had a problem until recently as DB says I have over 5GB. Can't find any way to contact them for resolution. I recently delted about 1GB if files but added nothing.
Wondering if anyone can help...thanks!

Have you checked your Backups page? Show us a screenshot of your usage shown on your Plan page. Be sure to mask any private information.

If I go to any device I have, the actual size is under 2GB.

Hello,
I'm getting constantly pestered to upgrade my account, because I'm over the storage space issue, which I have no intention to do.
I wanted to delete some files, only to be told "permanently deleting files won't free up space" which is highly illogical.
Does anyone know how to free up storage space?
It's been suggested to look at a backup page, but I don't seem to have one, at least I can't see one anywhere.
As it's impossible to really contact anyone in "support", any help here would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hey TM22UK, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Just to clarify, deleting files does free up space in your Dropbox; permanently deleting the already deleted files, though, won't free up any more space.
Are you receiving emails about your Dropbox space being full or pop-ups in your Dropbox?
What does your plan page show about your space usage?
- TM22UKNew member | Level 2
Hi Hannah,
Thanks for clarifying.
I have received a few emails about upgrading my account last few days.
But that's not really required, as I don't use Dropbox frequently. In fact, I only opened an account as this was the only option receiving some files from someone, years ago, and then again recently.
But as you wrote below, the issue looks now to be solved.
Thanks
