I have the "Dropbox Plus" subscription and I run the client on 4 computers. Yesterday (Monday, 13-Jan-2020) I signed onto my desktop (which is always on) and has a full local sync of my dropbox that a number of new files added Saturday had big red Xs on them -- JPEGs I had scanned Saturday and which were in sync to my laptop on Sunday morning. I checked my other workstation (also always on) and Dropbox wasn't even running. I launched it, and it pretty immediately ran a "one time update". Once this completed, it appeared to go into a full-on sync mode, indexing thousands of files and downloading thousands more (my total dropbox footprint is ~17k files, 600 GB of data). This has been running for 24 hours without making any apparent progress, despite the drive being materially in sync with my first workstation (using BeyondCompare to check). Plus not enough system activity to indicate any actual indexing or download was taking place. I paused workstation 2, uninstalled dropbox on workstation 1 and reinstalled it. Just prior to this, workstation 1 was "stuck" uploading 2 files and downloading 7 files, which it had been on since last night. Workstation 1 now shows "indexing" for around 8k files and "downloading" for 9k files. Trouble is, Resource Monitor doesn't show disk activity or network activity for that kind of activity. What's going on? I was perfectly in sync as of Saturday morning and over the last 24 hours it's gotten bad. Oddly, my laptop ("laptop 1") is apparently fine, showing more or less normal sync status as far as I can tell (and is on build 88.4.172).

Finally! SUCCESS. After 2 weeks of troubleshooting I'm "Up to date", fully sync'd.Symptom #1: "Syncing...." (with no indication of # of files) Dropbox dies after it runs out of memory.Root cause #1: A circular symlink that allowed for infinite path tranversal (e.g.: /root/a/b/c/d/symlinkto-b/c/d/symlinkto-b/c/d/symlinkto-b/c/d/etc..)Solution #1: Rearrange the symlinks so they cannot be infinitely traversed.---Symptom #2: Stuck at "Syncing ####, Downloading ####, Uploading ####" sometimes w/ speeds like 0.1k/s. Dropbox eats memory over time but never makes progress. The point at which it gets stuck seems random.Root cause #2: I run multiple applications within my Dropbox folder. Some of them use or create files that are not owned by the same user/process that Dropbox is using. So Dropbox doesn't have access to read *and* write to every single file that is created/updated by the applications. Solution #3: Ensure *EVERY* file within Dropbox's reach (including inside/past/through/beyond symlinks) is fully owned RW (read-write permissions) by the same user/account/process as the Dropbox process. The "Fix Permissions" button attempts to automate this, but who knows if it always works.---Key point: My system as it was before, lasted for 4-6 years worth of Dropbox updates. In the past if Dropbox couldn't read/sync/access a file, it would continue on sync'ing everything else. If I gave it READ access to the unsync'd file, that was enough, it could sync and move on.There were obviously some significant changes to Dropbox in the past few weeks that have made it so if you have 1 single file that cannot be changed (WRITE, UPDATE) by Dropbox, it will destroy your entire sync with no indication what's going on. This is crazy, counterintuitive, and shame on Dropbox for not communicating this major change to us. I'm on Linux, so it's pretty straight forward to search for files that Dropbox cannot edit (+w). Windows isn't as friendly and likes to hide files, so if you're on Windows it may require some extra searching to locate the culprit(s). Be sure to try the "Fix Permissions" button and check all symlinks to see if they're circular.To Daphne 's credit, if I had followed her troubleshooting steps TO THE LETTER (delete all symlinks, run the custom Linux Fix Permissions script), I probably would have solved this sooner. However, the reality of live applications running on this server coupled with the fact that everything worked as-is for 4-6 years made me very skeptical. To Dropbox's non-credit (debt?) -- WAKE UP and provide a detailed CHANGELOG to your users like every other company on the planet. The one you give now is quite shallow and never mentioned this change. Something this significant is even worthy of a technical blog post from your engineers. I wish I could send you a bill for my 40+ hours of trouble.

From what I've read in this thread, it seems the Dropbox update has caused widespread syncing problems.My guess is that Dropbox does not have adequate server capacity to handle all of the re-syncing that is being requested, and that explains the low download rates users are experiencing.Unfortunately, it's unlikely Dropbox will acknowledge this, because it would imply they need to offer some form of compensation to users for not providing the service level paid for.So instead, Dropbox appears to be running a disinformation campaign portraying the issue as caused by users, such as the symlink problem that keeps coming up in support messages.Ironically, Dropbox's advice that users keep trying to re-sync simply maintains the overload of server requests, perpetuating the problem.But Dropbox makes millions from many users, so the delay is not much to them. However, individual users who cannot access files are losing productivity and reputation in their own work, which matters a lot. Dropbox needs to understand that.

Yes I am having the exact same problem!- Notification stuck at 'Syncing...'- Just happened all of a sudden with recent Dropbox update 88.4.172- Tried the 'Fix hardlinks' and 'Fix permissions' and didn't help.- Wasted hours with tech support about this and they kept insisting it's just a "wait and let it sync" thing!So many people are experiencing the same thing so clearly it's a bug! If so many people are complaining about this issue then it's time Dropbox look at what's really happening instead of giving us generic solutions.I clearly explained to the tech support what was happening and they kept insisting I just need to let it "Sync" when I told them the Sync is stuck/not doing anything and that I have nothing to upload/download/re-index.If you log out and then rename your Dropbox folder to something else and then create a new empty Dropbox folder then log back in, Dropbox will actually start the full sync and download process SHOWING notification updates like 'Downloading 10 files...'. But the download speed is massively slow. Again, there are many complaints that download speed is slow recently but Dropbox will handball it with generic solutions.

Recently I've had the initial starting/indexing bit take ten minutes, instead of ten seconds. I'm not sure when it started happening exactly, but I'm positive it was in the last two weeks, much like many of the users here.

Note that I use two symbolic links with Dropbox... but they are FROM my Dropbox TO another location. That is to say, I am using the symlink to present e.g. D:/Dropbox/blah/ as C:/.../.../.../.../blah/. (The folder icon with the shortcut icon added to it is outside Dropbox.) So as far as I understand things, the actual symbolic links are outside Dropbox. This may be an important detail.

I guess I was fortunate enough to have the app merely be very slow instead of stuck... where it gets very interesting is that this is happening on a laptop I have not touched during that time, so my best guess is that it's something wrong in the Dropbox app.

Like others, I am seeing basically 0 drive activity and 100% usage on one core during this issue.

Once the app gets past "Starting..." (which takes about a minute), it then gets stuck on "Indexing 1 file" (displayed as "Syncing 1 file" in the expanded tray) for about 3 to 4 minutes. It then goes to just "Syncing..." for 2 or 3 more minutes.

Using Resource Monitor, I see Dropbox calling for the following files:

Let me know if there is any additional information I can provide (logs etc)

Dropboxd is currently using 100% of a core, 10GB of RAM, and is at 462 minutes on the CPU. I'm not optimistic.

I switched from Google Drive to Dropbox 16 months ago, because Google Drive maxed out my CPU, duplicated folders and files, took forever to scroll files, and more. The particulars are at https://www.quora.com/Why-is-Google-Drive-so-slow-for-downloading-and-uploading
Dropbox was a breath of fresh air. Low CPU use, fast uploads and downloads, fast indexing, fast scrolling through many files online. I was very happy to pay double the cost per terabyte at the time.
Now, I wonder if Dropbox is starting to move away from developing smaller-scale online backup like Google Drive did. If so, from a few decades' experience with software, the only solution I know of would be to move to a new company who wants new customers needing good backup solutions.

  FOR Anyone witrh the NEW relase that is now STUCK syncing/restarting/limbo
  OK what appears is the database DB uses to monitor your files was "updated" and the process requires a reindex. For reasons unknown thios doesnt seem to work anywhere near well enough.
  Here was my solution to get around it.
  1) UNLINK the PC, restart
  2) rename the DROPBOX folder OLDBOX
  3) LINK the PC, during signup, select to selectively sync NOTHING!
  4) Once upto date (with no files present), change your settings to what they used to be, like save space settings etc, and apply
  5) Once upto date (should be near instant), change the selective sync to what it used to be, and apply.
  6) shutdown the DB app
  7) move the content of the saved folder OLDBOX over top the the current dropbox content
  8) start the DB app again
  9) await it to sync/check/update (takes a while but is a **bleep** load faster now)
  
  Its STEP 5 that I think helps, when you have cloud only files I expect you get all the reindex data sent to you from the dropbox servers as you dont have the files so cant reindex them. Then when you replace those with the original files and restart the app, it sees a real file and compares the content to the index data, and finds it the same so moves on. This appears alot quicker than reindexing the original files and then comparing it to the dropbox servers index data, its likely just a timing or bulk activity thing, that you get sent all the index data at once when you change the selective sync rather than fetching it yourself form the file then comparing that to the servers one file at a time.
  
  I just got a server with 2+TB in 700k+ of files back up.
  While it was processing a few files were updated rempotely and the syustem dealt with them as they appeared, likely on a sperate execution thread.

    It is syncing now, will need a couple of days it seems, but I am unstuck!
    For reference, I was stuck in "Syncing..." status for 13 days. No crashes, No CPU or Memory consumption, it was just sitting there "Syncing..."
    Server_Align 's trick did the job. I do not see extended double files or anything, new files from the cloud are downloading and my "stuck" files are being uploaded, all seems fine.

Hey Shawn B.14, I hope you're well today!

After some updates or reinstallations, it would be expected that the desktop app does a quick reindex of your files. However, the stuck syncing seems to be the problem here.

Can you try the following steps to see if they do the trick:

Click the Dropbox icon in your system tray.

Click the profile pic/initials icon in the top right of the window.

Choose "Preferences..."

Go to the "Account" tab.

While holding the Space bar key, click "Fix Hardlinks".

If you don't see any progress in the syncing status after a short period of time, please try the above again but instead choose "Fix permissions".

You can try this with both devices, but I'd suggest trying the steps with workstation 2 first.

  I did both these steps without any apparent change in sync/indexing status or any change in system load which would indicate actual indexing or sync activity.
  If anything, I'd say it's gotten slightly worse as the "indexing" count is up to 8k now.
  What's the next troubleshooting step, an "advanced reinstall"?

    Usually, if incorrect permissions are the cause of stuck syncing, applying the fixes mentioned above would allow syncing to progress so it may be expected that the number increases for a time while the app works away.

  Tried all the fixes suggested by @Daphne and still not working. This is clearly a widespread issue. I have 3 machines that are having the same stuck on connecting/synching issue.

Also have problem here. This machine has been online uninterrupted on a 1GBit internet connectio, still, though, it says 65 files to sync, taking several days, suddenly says 45 files and 2 days and then changes back. What is going on? Dropbox is communicating over network at around 150 bps. There is no way to see what files are being synced and queued - and what direction. If the UI showed this, at least the user would be able to see if things seem to be right or not. Dropbox also restarted several times yesterday, doing 3 updates. So I removed it, cleared the cache and reinstalled. But is still syncing. Have checked for links and permission a month ago (running on Windows). Now it says 37 files +2 days - how is that possible? Something is clearly wrong with DropBox at the moment. In the past there were never such problems.

  Ah, sweet relief. Online file storage is working as it should now. OneDrive is syncing like a Swiss watch and I canceled my Dropbox Plus account. I have a big smile on my face. :grin:

  If your down to 65 I would suggest this approach. (assuming windows but my understanding is mac has similar icons)
  
  Open file explorer, enter the dropbox folder, look for the folder with the spinning icon of still syncing, and then enter that folder, and repeat until you find the files it is still syncing, and DOWNLOAD them if in ther cloud only and UPLOAD them if on the device only, and examine and make a choise if on both.
  
  I just had a device that was stuck at 31 files and I found them all in one folder and a few subfolders, nothing looked special about the folder, I tried the making the cloud only then local again, no fix, so I just downloaded the folder then unpacked the zip over the local device copy, this synced to the cloud and the app dropped to "up to date" about 15 seconds later.

    I removed boxifier and installed it again several times: dropbox is always stuck. I just opened a google drive account, and I'm going to close my dropbox plan soon, as I don't see any progress in the solution of the problem. We gave you several weeks to fix, but we don't have an endless patience....
