Incorrect dropbox space usage on windows
Hi Guys,
My local Windows Dropbox is fully synced with my online Dropbox. Windows Explorer file/properties shows my Dropbox folder is 576 MB but to my surprise, dropbox.com and dropbox app both say my dropbox is full. I have checked the plan tab and found my regular file size is 3.4 GB which is not correct. My shared folder only takes less than 100 MB. What is going on here? Why the discrepancy? Any inputs?
Thanks,
Tao
We can confirm that the most recent releases of Dropbox should have resolved this issue. Users affected by this issue were unable to see all of the backups on their account. This meant that when they believe they deleted some or all of their files, there could still be backups taking up space on their account. This should no longer be affecting users who should be able to see all of their backups.
You can find out deleted information on disabling and deleting backups below:
If you disable the backup and choose to "Leave content in Dropbox", your backup content would still be there until it was permanently deleted.
When you go to the Backups page and see no content, be sure to check the deleted section, too.
You can download the files from this location if you need to store them locally on your device.
To clear out the data from the deleted backup, follow these steps:- Navigate to
dropbox.com/backup/all
- Click on
Show deleted backups
- Select their backup and click on
permanently delete
Some users did not have backups, but they were members of shared folders which were taking up space on their accounts. You can remove shared folders using these instructions.
If you are still experiencing quota issues after following these steps, then confirm that we can reach out to you via email and our support agents will look into this with you.- Navigate to

I have Dropbox Basic. I deleted every folder and file in my Dropbox, and Backup is not enabled.
I get on Preferences > Account on the macOS app: "83.0% of 16.9GB used". I get "Using 14.01GB of 16.88GB storage" on the Preferences on the web page.
What I checked:
- App says status is "Your files are up to date".
- www.dropbox.com/home shows no file is present there.
- My dropbox folder on the Mac is empty. Hidden files are just some small files. I also erased the cache folder there, but it was already small (~49MB). No change in space used.
- Backup page shows Size: 0 bytes / Number of files: 0.
Please help!

Why is dropbox saying I am out of space? I am not. Why are the folders in my dropbox empty? Why are the files listed as "waiting to sync"? Waiting for what?

Hi there SecretAdmin, sorry to hear you're having issues with this.
Can you please let us know if you see any files or folders taking up space in your account's homepage or your backups page?
What exactly is reported in your account's plan tab in regards to your quota?
Let us know what you find and we'll take it from there.

Hi!
I've opened a ticket weeks ago but nobody helped me.
TICKET #20764856The thing it's that I don't have any document in the cloud and still looking FULL, like I'm using my 2 GB of storage of my basic account. That means that I can't use dropbox with the "free version", I have to do an upgrade or at last give up on this. I've sent all the information and screenshoots.
It's been a month, nobody cares.
Please, can anybody help me?
Thanks!- RichSuper User II

Hi all,
We have files that amount to about 1 gb in our free account and no backup used, but we are getting notifications that our account is out of space and it has stopped syncing. Could you help with this?

Are you a member of any shared folders? These take up space in your account as well. Take a look at the space usage on your Plan page. What does it show for Regular, Shared and Unused space? Also, you say you're not using Backup, but have you checked the Backups page, just to be certain?
- ikalaExplorer | Level 3
yes, I have checked and do not have any backup space used. As per my shared folders, all of them account for less than 1 gb

I only have shared files in my dropbox but it shows Regular files takes up 12 GB. I tried to find the back up files in www.dropbox.com/backups/pc but I didn't setup backups. How can I find that Regular files and delete them?

Hi Saledeptung! Thanks for the details you’ve sent over.
If you go to your All files page, what’s the size of personal files you see there? You can also double check this by following these steps.

I have Dropbox Basic plan of 7.4GB, 5GB I earned from refer a friend.
Dropbox has been stating for a while that I am out of space, yet I believe I was only using less than 25% of my limit. So, today I emptied my DropBox folders, leaving only one shared folder of 113.7MB. There are no other shares, no backups and no deleted files, yet it's showing:
Your personal Dropbox account is full, Using 18.3 GB of 7.38 GBStandard files (18.2 GB)Shared files (113.7 MB)Backup info:
Backups Size: 0 bytesNumber of files: 0Any help would be greatly apricated.

Hi Hat1, welcome to our Community!
You mentioned that you deleted the majority of your content, and you've already checked your Backups in regards to your storage space.
Can you try to access and delete any folders within the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/backups/PC ?
Let me know of the results!
- Hat1New member | Level 2
Thank you for your response. You're absolutely correct, I can now see where all my used data is - you've solved it for me 🙂
Checking https://www.dropbox.com/backup/all shows no files or data but using your link (https://www.dropbox.com/backups/PC) I can see numerous folders & files.
Thank you.

My total file load is barely 400 MB, yet I receive messages I need to upgrade to paid services, because my stored file exceed 8.12 GB. How come?

Megan,
It's been several month because I have not needed to use Dropbox.
My account says that I'm WAY over the limit of my plan (2GB). It says that I am using 77 GB of space. I know that that figure is a huge error. I'm certain that the documents I have in storage are well below 2GB.
Could this be because there have been multiple replicating backups? How can I get access to the documents in storage to confirm or deny that the 77 GB is an error?

I can't find what is taking up the room? No shared folders are listed which I created, and none are listed I was invited to view. My only Apps backed up to Dropbox are Scrivener and Scapple, on Mac, taking up 211 MB space. They are in the only visible folder on my Dropbox. I deleted a bunch of old files that were in that folder, but it didn't free up any room. 1.8 GB/2.0GB of "regular files" with no way to view them to see what the hell they are, that I know of? I'm reluctant to upgrade and pay for service, when I can't tell if I'm being scammed or glitched at the free tier? Thanks if anybody can point me the right way.

Backups tab shows me I have zero folders located there, taking up zero space. Should I backup my text files to external hard drive, uninstall and delete my Dropbox account on all 3 devices, and reinstall fresh? I’m really only trying to use it for two creative writing apps, Scrivener and Scapple. iCloud takes care of everything else on my Macs and iPad that would need cloud backup, but those two apps were built with Dropbox in mind. Thanks for any help you may be able to offer!

Hi! My dropbox is refusing to sync on the grounds that I have about 6.5gb of data on it (I have the free plan). Trouble is, I don't. I've checked and I have 9.01mb of data, including shared folders. I've also recently done some runs through my data deleting things, and it still says I'm at 6.5gb. Does anyone know what's going on? I've tried following the advice on this article...
...but all the instructions seem to be either for Mac (I'm on PC) or for an older version of dropbox, as, for example, my app has no dropbox icon that I can see.
I really like dropbox and want to keep using it, and I'd even consider upgrading if I knew why my files were taking up more space than they look like, but I don't want to resolve this just by upgrading because I don't want to pay for a glitchy system.
Thanks!

Hey ElectricWhelk, I moved your post to this relevant thread, so you can take a look at the info posted here.
Is it possible that you enabled our backup feature and your space is being taken up by backups?
You can check that here.
- ElectricWhelkExplorer | Level 3
Hi Hannah
Thanks - there is nothing in my backups folder. As per the advice a bit further up in this thread I also checked my homepage and sharing tab; the former had no files that I hadn't accounted for while checking out my data usage, while the latter had a couple which I thought I'd removed myself from; however, they weren't very large and after removing myself from them the amount of storage I am using does not seem to have changed.
Any other thoughts?
