Folders Appearing and Filling with Empty Folders Every Few Minutes on Mac OS

Dropbox has begun placing folders within folders in my Documents Folder.  I'm on a new MacBook Pro running the newest operating system, and this just started up yesterday.  Odd thing is I haven't used dropbox in quite some time.

I went on, and deleted everything on both accounts, and the problem persisted, so I deleted my account entirely and got rid of all associated files on the computer, and still the problem persists.  I reactivated one of the accounts so I could come here to ask for help.

The folder is called:

com.apple.app-analytics.production.upload-dropbox

Inside are hundreds of folders with names like below.  There are about 18 per hour:

I followed the link, but it only had instructions for Windows.  I did a search on how to run an advanced reinstall on Mac, but couldn't find a Mac version of that page.

The link contains instructions for Windows, Mac and Linux, you'll need to click the option for Mac to see those steps.

I'm also experiencing the same issue. I deleted the folder several times, but the parent folder reappears and a new subfolder appears every three to five minutes. Also on Sonoma 14.5, but I haven't had Dropbox installed for several weeks now.

I believe I’ve identified the culprit. I was able to open a file in one of the randomly-created folders, and it referenced the iPadOS Weather widget. I turned off the option to Share iPad Analytics (Settings > Privacy & Security > Share iPad Analytics), and it seems like it fixed the issue. I normally have the setting off, but must have enabled it by mistake when updating to 17.5 earlier this week.

I also turned off the option to share analytics on the MBP and iPhone, and all is good (so far! 🤞).

Anyway, I hope this helps some of you.

I don't seem to have this option im my Privacy & Security. There is no Share iPad Analytics available on my Mac. Am I missing something? I just went through the nearly 50 folders and there is nothing in any of them.

I spent two hours on a chat with Apple. It ended with me disconnecting chat to reboot Mac Mini is "safe mode." I was just about to type that fixed the problem when right before my eyes another folder appeared . . . time for a new chat . . . .

I was able to find a temporary solution. Right click on the 'com.apple.app-analytics.production.upload-dropbox' folder, and select 'get info' in the menu. Under the General tab, I locked the folder and I have not gotten any new folders within in since. Only downside is that the main folder must stay in the directory, I will just rename it something or try to hide it. Hope this helps!

Hey all, I *think* I have found the solution. I used EasyFind to search my *entire* Mac for the folder we're seeing in Documents: com.apple.app-analytics.production.upload-dropbox. There are 10 total of them on my Mac, including the one in Documents. I focused on the word "analytics" and started looking around. I already had analytics turned off here:

...but I DID NOT have it turned off here: Privacy & Security --> Location Services --> System Services (Click "Details...")

Since turning off "Mac Analytics" I've not seen a new folder added to Documents/com.apple.app-analytics.production.upload-dropbox in almost 24 hours!

Sadly no. That didn't do it for me. All those same tabs are turned off. Did you do a restart first? Still getting folders every 3 minutes.

Interesting that permissions on the Document directory is me R+W, Everyone Else, "No Access" Yet files are being written.

~/Library/Application support has the same permissions. This is where these type of files are written. Seems a developer didn't test this.
